Small chance that your hard drive may not be compatible. Our USB compatibility thread is here. Have a look to see if your drive is there or not.

Also, check my signature for a link for directions on how to generate and properly post a syscheck. Let's have a look at what's inside your system to see if you missed something when you followed the guide.

EDIT: Oh yeah. SD card. I think some loaders MIGHT be able to be configured to look at SD instead of USB, but it's a bit of a hassle, and unless you have a good quality card, will be slow. You shouuld look into getting a USB drive.

And you should be ripping your games from the disk directly on the storage device to ensure the best quality game rip.

So If I put the wsbf file on a USB drive and use the USB Loader GX it will find the game ? I want to try that first before we get into the sytem checks. I followed all the steps carefully and none of them errored out. Thanks so much for the prompt answers llaffer and blaisedinsd . I appreciate it.

Awesome guide and worked perfectly! I do have one question (and I apologize if this existed somewhere else in the thread) but is there any conflicts while having this setup and Dios Mios? I want to backup my gamecube games on my wii which has been softmodded with these steps.

This guide will not affect the DM.

    You will be perfectly fine.

I do the same thing. The next thing after following this guide is to follow one of the USB formatting guides. Since you know you want to USB load GameCube games, use the FAT32 guide (link in my sig) and make sure you format it using 32k clusters (may not be in the guide, but the guide was written for Wii loading more then GC loading. It is a requirement for GC loading. So better to do that right the first time.)

Hi all. I realize that almost anything that can been asked probably already has been, due to the size of this thread, but...over 1600 pages is a lot to go through! O.O

I have been thinking of buying a Wii this week. I am usually more of a PC gamer, and the only console I've owned has been a GameCube. But, I was thinking of buying a Roku to play Netflix on my TV, and since the original Wii is so cheap at this point, I figured, this way I could have Netflix play on my TV, plus have it play my GameCube games, plus play Wii games. (I figure this is still worth buying, even though the Wii U is out, right?)

I'm just wondering, should it be pretty easy for someone who doesn't know anything about the Wii or its software to just pick one up, and follow all of these steps in order to have a modded Wii? I consider myself to be pretty good with technology, and I've always been able to jailbreak iProducts, and root my Android phones and play around with different ROMs, flash kernels, etc. But looking through this guide and comments, I don't know anything about anything, so I feel a little lost. I have googled around too to learn more, but still feel lost in a sea of information.

I found an already modded Wii online selling for less than a Wii in stores. But, I prefer to have a brand new system. I'm trying to figure out if this is simple enough for a newbie in this area to take on, or if I should just purchase the already modded one. Will I be able to play DVDs in the Wii with this too? The modded one I found says it has a media player for that, but not sure if that's possible after following this guide, or if additional steps are needed.

    I appreciate any responses.

EDIT: Looking through these guides further, I see something about no backwards compatibility after 2011. So, if I were to purchase a new Wii from Walmart, I can no longer play my GameCube games on it?

    1. Many of the posts in this thread have been "Thank You for making this so simple" posts from people like yourself who had no idea how to do it. All I can say is if you do get a Wii, just follow this guide slowly, step by step, and you will be fine

    2. There are some Wii consoles that do not have the gamecube controller ports. Make sure when you buy one you look for this. An easy way to tell (I learned this from llaffer just the other day) is where the word Wii is on the console.

If it looks like this with the Wii logo at the bottom sitting vertically, it can play GameCube games:

If it has the logo next to the sd slot with the console laying flat, it doesnt play GC games:

Thank you, interesting. I don't know if the items they carry in-store reflect the images they have on their websites, but according to stock images, it seems that Best Buy and Walmart only carry the horizontal Wii, while Gamestop and Target might have a model of the vertical version. The guy online who is selling his modded Wii is including a few burned CDs (or DVDs?) with games, so he must be selling an old Wii? According to the linked guide with some info in the first post of this thread, any newer Wii can't play burned content...

Any Wii you buy from the store will be the "lying flat" version. If you want one that can play GameCube games, you're likely looking at used sales.

GameStop's refirbs may be what you want, they'll be cheaper and could be the older versions. Be sure to mention that you want one that can play GameCube games and if you can look at what's in e box first before buying. If they want your business, they should be able to help you do this.

Or, you may have to look to eBay/craigslist to buy a used system directly from the previous owner. You'll want to make sure that they actually work and not bricked, since I've heard stories of people selling their system to someone else only to find them bricked, then they come here asking for help getting it to work. You're best to know it's a working system before buying it.

Thanks, I ended up getting one from GameStop, refurb, for $80 (before tax). Older model with the GC ports. Wondering if it is worth just paying the extra ~$40 for a brand new one and using my GC to play GC, but...the one I bought seems to work fine. Now to sit down and softmod. I will probably do that sometime next week, when I have more time to sit down and go through each step slowly. Hopefully people will still be around here, just in case!
