a) All versions support DVD playback.
b) Bannerbomb, follow the instructions in the "3.0-4.1 Bannerbomb" spoiler

If this comment is specific to the wii drive i posted? if not , does that mean that any wii on latest version 4.3e would be able to play media DVDs?

All Wii consoles support DVD media playback. Not all support backup game disc playing.
Read the guide. There is a place where it tells you how to update to 4.1.....

I changed it from -1 (default) to 221, 222, 249 and 250 and noon worked.
The black screen happens to me wen I try to play Zack & Wiki, No More Heroes 1, Cooking Mama.
I also have 2 other problems...
When trying to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I enter the game, I can listen to the sounds when I press the A and the menu music but I have no TV signal. The TV just gives "No Input".
I tryed forcing PAL 50 and PAL60.
Also in USB Loader GX I've setted it to display game channels like the default wii interface, I mean, instead of displaying the game covers it shows the "like-TV channel". But the Mad World "TV" shows in black and If I load it, It gives black screen.
Can you help me?
Thanks in advance!!!!

No list of WADs to install
First of all, many thanks for this guide!
Now, my issue...
I'm following this guide in a 4.3E wii.
I managed to install HBC and BootMii using LetterBomb.
I did the mandatory NAND backup
I downloaded the wads
I verified the checksums (question: how can I use the MD5sum files from md5summer in Linux's md5sum?)
And now I'm stucked on part 1, Wad Installs!
- I did run Wiimod through HBC
- I selected "Wad manager"
- it did found the list of wads
- I did the batch install
- it stoped after installing 2 (or 3) wads! It blocked completly! I had to to a hard reset
- switch-on -> HBC -> Wad manager
- but now it does not show the list of wads to install!?! It showed the following messages:
[+] Mounting device, please wait... OK!
[+] Retrieving file list...
Press any key to continue
- I pressed a key and I got a lis of SD card only showing the two dirs: "apps" and "wad".
Any idea what might be happening?
Many thaks in advance.
Part 1- Wad Installs
This guide now uses WiiMod to install the required files to your Wii.
!!!WARNING!!! - WiiMod is a very advanced application. Follow the instructions EXACTLY as written. Messing with options in WiiMod without know exactly what you are doing COULD BRICK YOUR WII. You have been warned!!!!
-Power on your Wii and insert your sd card. Or insert your SD card and power on your Wii. Either way, as long as your SD card is inserted and your Wii is on, that is what is important.
-Launch the Homebrew Channel, then launch Wiimod.
-Use the d-Pad on your Wii remote to scroll down to Wad Manager.
-Press A to select.
-The contents of the wad folder on your sd card will appear.
-Press 1 to batch install all wads. You will be prompted "Do you want to proceed?" Press A to proceed.
-After completion, you may press any button to continue.

I replaced the SDHC (8GB) I was using, by a 2GB SD card and tried again, this time only with the ModPack (no IOS update as it is a 4.3 and no Wii Shop Channel).
And this time it worked! Probably because of the SD (instead of SDHC), but could also be because I only used the ModPack's wads.
Anyway, I now have a black 4,3E properly sofmoded, thanks to this guide!
Many, many thanks and keep up the good work.

Installed homebrew, did a backup.
Using SD 1Gb.
Running IOS 35.
Cannot run the wiimod.
A black screen appears when I try to launch the wiimod. HB is 1.1.0.
Doing this the first time. A newbie
How to launch the wiimod and what WADs to isntall first, updating ios or installing cios?
Cant update nor shopping nor system menu cuz cannot launch wiimod.
What do I have to do?
Also I cannot set up the wifi connection cuz 51330 error occurs but the key is right.
What am I doing wrong?
No matter how do I try to start the wiimod, by hbc or wii -> data managment -> channels -> sd.
It hangs up with a black screen.
