I've read through the guide many times but I'm not sure where I went wrong -- I'm trying to load games with the usb loader gx from my WD my book essential and it keeps saying "usb device not found" .. One time it did find the device and I saw my games on there - but when I clicked it nothing happened. I've tried formatting my hdd to fat32 and ntfs. I have a macbook pro if that helps, but I plugged my WD into a windows computer to make sure the partition was "active" - however this computer is very old & laggy and not practical for downloading any applications - so I have to do this through my mac.. Also, my wii is 4.3u. I have my games as .wbfs files saved in a folder called "wbfs" .. I made sure to plug into the proper usb slot too

I am very much a noob at this so I apologize in advance if I've done something completely wrong. I've spent the entire day trying to figure this out and searching the forums but nothing has worked. Also I have no idea what trucha bug means but it doesn't sound good ..

    Spoiler

what size is the hard drive and whats the model number? also, usb 2 or usb 3?

i had a mybook essential that did the same thing and what i did to solve the issue was to take apart the case and move it to a generic enclosure. there is something about the way the new WD mybook essential drives read/write that the wii doesnt like, and ill wager its that the hardware on it encrypts the data and the wii doesnt like that.

It's a 500gb and it says: WD500H1CS-00 on the bottom.. not sure if that helps? Does the system check look okay though? hmm.. what kind of hard drives are best for storing games for the wii? Maybe I'll just sell my WD if that's the case..

I have no idea how to check if it's usb 2 or 3

its a usb2.0 drive. wd used to be the recommended brand for wiis. nowadays, people go with whats cheap. im not sure if that drive is encrypting data or not VIA the hardware controller. another user who had this issue had success in sort of resolving this issue. what he did was hit the power button on the hard drive when usb loader gx came up.

oh thanks! I'll give that a shot and let you know how it goes.. I decided to stick with ntfs formatting over fat32 - you think that might be why it's acting funky too?

has nothing to do with the filesystem. its the hardware controller thats in the external case thats causing the problem.

So I tried pushing the power button on the WD when USB loader gx was loading and it just froze on "initialize USB device" .. Any ideas? I'm not sure if I feel comfortable enough undoing the case to the hard drive :/

thats the thread i created along with the solution another member came up with. check it out!

I didn't know you could take those things apart. Let alone know that there was just a regular hard drive inside it and you could put it in another enclosure. But anyway, I think I found a workaround. I did a lot more searching and I can't remember where exactly I found this but someone suggested that right before you load up USB Loader GX you press the power button on the back of the USB hard drive. For whatever reason that seems to work. The hard drive automatically turns on when I start my Wii and pressing the power button on the back doesn't seem to do anything but I guess it must. I tested it several times by trying to load it up without pressing anything and my Wii would freeze on "initilize usb device". But everytime I pressed the power button on the back and then loaded up USB Loader GX it started up just fine. So it's kinda annoying to always have to press that button but at least it is working for now.

Try unplugging the drive from the Wii when it says "initializing USB device", then plug it right back in. Let us know if it works then.

when I do that it goes through to the usb loader application screen but says "usb device not found. switching to channel list mode" ... Do you think the portable WD My Passport hard drives would work better with the wii? I have one but I have a lot of files on it and I'd hate to have to format it then find out it doesn't work.. is my system check okay though?

thank you guys so much for trying to help me!

I checked out this link and tried what they said but to no avail.. I don't think I'm tech savvy enough to put the hard drive in a new enclosure
