I had the same problem(using 4.3E) and read in abother guide(not this website) that you should complete level one of the indianna game, (I think when you fly off in the plane), then save that game, then go out and delete that game(sd manager) and copy across the one for your region then start the game and load the reaion game and follow as normal after that. Also format to FAT32.(not specified in guide)
I did the above steps and it worked. The guide here did not work for me either, these points should be clarified.
    hope thsi helps

Try this- format the sd card
Extract the elf file from http://www.nyleveia.com/daco/Bootmii_Booter.zip to sd:\ and name it boot.elf
    Extract bootmii_folder-NTSC.zip to sd:\
    Extract Hackmii_0.8_bootmini.zip to sd:\
Run Indiana PWNS, bootmii should load.
Use the buttons on the wii to navigate bootmii or a gc controller, the wiimote will not work. Go to the sd menu in bootmii and load the bootmini.elf.
This should launch the hackmii installer, install HBC.

So I finished with Chapter 1 of modding my wii but I've started to get worried about it getting bricked and would like to wait a bit before I try again. If I leave the stuff on will there be any problems? If so what should I do?

You can stop and just leave it as is. Perhaps you finish, perhaps not. You can use the HBC for many things, like movies and roms.

I'm not really even sure what you're asking. You should not accept updates --- that's what Priiloader is for. Also, your username is unacceptable; please re-register with a suitable username and PM me when this is done. This "first account" would then be banned/notated as objectionable and you may resume your activities on site.

Mauifrog has already answered your question; as he's the author of this particular softmod guide, it stands to reason he knows what he's talking about (I know he does, but you're a new user --- so that's why I mention it).
