I kind of thought that ANY was enough to get the point across. I don't know what 4.3.1 is either....is that what shows on your wii?

hey frog, i did ur softmod and it worked. however, i am running ur disk backup loader (neogama) but running from disk dvd-r because i have an old wii. however, i want to run game from usb flash drive. i flipped the drive so it is recognized as a fixed drive and added wbsf game already. however, how do i run the wbsf game? i click on the usb configurable cfg while plugging in the usb drive, but nothing happened; it just went back to system menu. i then click backup loader and press A and choose "load from usb via wsbf file" but nothing happened too. however, when i try to load from sd/sdhc or whatever, i see the countdown number. but for usb via wsbf file, i click "A" but the screen just stayed the same. so, how do i load via usb flash drive, which i already made it as a fixed drive using lexar utility? thanks

    mauifrog,
Thanks for the quick response. Found the problem. There was a short between the monitor and the seat. I had not put the SD card back in the Wii after copying files to it. The nine year old came through for his old man, it turns out. At any rate, the mod worked perfectly. Thanks for the easy-to-follow instructions. Very well thought out.

    Hi guys,

I think I'm ready to go forward with the softmod (4.3E, got SSBB so going to use the PAL SmashStack) but I only have a small (256MB) SD card while I have a handful of 4GB SDHC cards. Can I use the 256MB SD for the intial softmod and then use the 4GB SDHC to backup the NAND?

From what I understand, Wii v.4.0+ can read SDHCs, it's just SSBB which can't read SDHC, so surely once the inital softmod has started I might be able to use an SDHC?

    Regards,
    Bobly

You can try that. The softmod itself should work/fit on the 256mb SD card (I think; you may wish to check this, it's been awhile since I had to contend with such a small card). You will not be able to make the NAND backup, as you observed. You can try to do so on the 4gb SDHC, but if there's issues be aware it would relate to the SDHC.

It won't hurt trying, but if unsuccessful be aware making a NAND backup is considered mandatory. You'd need to source at least a 1gb card for that if your attempts don't pay off...

Do you think there's any chance I could brick my wii or is everything up to the NAND backup process brick-safe?

Also, if I am unable to backup the NAND, would I still be able to use the wii even though I've started a softmod while waiting for the SD to arrive?

I ended up ordering a 1GB SD anyway although it won't arrive for a few days but I'm tempted to attempt the SD + SHDC install as an experiment if it's safe anyway.

No sure thing is available anywhere or for anything. You leave yourself vulnerable by not doing every possible thing mentioned for prevention.

Oh of course I understand the disclaimers fully, I mean more in a generic: If I follow all the steps to the letter with an added grain of common sense (IT litterate + softmodded before), are there any obvious risks in attempting a 256MB SD softmod at first (to use the SSBB loader) and then switching to an SDHC for the NAND Backup and possibly the rest of the softmod (see further up about how SSBB requires an SD but the wii menu supports SDHC). If it sounds like a stupid idea I'll just wait for the 1GB to arrive.
