To see if cIOSCORP/DARKCORP is installed, you have to run sysCheck.
Run it with BannerBomb if you don't have the Homebrew Channel. BannerBomb can be found in this thread.
It will leave a report after finishing on the root of your SD Card: sysCheck.csv.

Open the file and copy + paste the information to this thread.
We can see if cIOSCORP/DARKCORP is installed or not with the information.

Ah done. Krank also told me to do this, but it took me a while to understand that I didnt already have to have HBC installed in order to run it. But yeah, I get it now, you can run bannerbomb and run anything - one of the things you can run is the HBC installer, another thing is this syscheck program. dOh! Here is the result:

Nope, you don't have cIOSCORP/DARKCORP installed.

Can you tell by that lot whether I have a stock AUS wii or a region changed korean? The thing which still puzzles me is that if its korean as the seller said, why was I able to upgrade to 4.2 without bricking.

And if its AUS like it says near the serial number, why cant I get the drivekey gamecube menu to display by pressing eject three times after reset. gah!

    he has said:

    a) he sold me a korean wii
    b) it is drive chipped and region changed
    c) the reason I cannot access the drivekey menu (appears as gamecube disc) is that korean wiis dont support gamecube

this made perfect sense to me until I realised the following:

    a) the identifier on my wii says RVL-001(AUS)
    b) I successfully updated to 4.2e and that is suppoed to brick even region -changed koreans

so something(s) dont add up. I suppose I can crack the wii and look for the drivekey, but I would still like to (somehow) verify what software I am running in order to select the safest softmodding option.

    many thanks.
He ripped you off, I don't think you have a chip. Can you play backup disks from the disk channel? Or did that stop working after the update? If you can play backups, you must have a chip, perhaps not the kind you think you do. Korean wiis have no issue playing gc-game once bc and mios is installed. The clasic way to change a Korean wii is to play mario kart which installs all the ios, and bc and mios. You do not have a Korean wii.

I think the seller, just like mauifrog said, totally ripped you off.

Now maybe I am a little confused, but what exactly seems to be your problem, anyway?
sysCheck says you are running 4.2E anyway, so I don't see your problem here? Just follow the guide.

    Hello mauifrog,

Just bought myself a wii. Asked the seller if it was modded he told me that it was softmodded to play Back up Copy Disc games and not games on hard drives. He told me that the firmware was 4.1 and from the looks of it its a korean wii. I was planning of softmodding the wii so it could play games through a hard drive. Is it safe to say that I can use your guide? Should I ask anymore additional info so you can recommend me if this is safe?

    Thanks for the future help.

Hi, thanks again. My problem was that I simply didnt know what I had under the hood, so I didnt know which upgrade path to choose.

I was told I had a region changed korean with a drivekey (it does play backups) . But then I read here that if that was the case, I should have bricked when I went to 4.2, so I was like HUH?

Anyway, looks like the normal upgrade can be used, so thats what Ill do. cheers

If the wii console has even a fairly recent cios installed, it should be able to play backups from usb just as well as disk. You may not have a loader installed to do it, but that is simple enough

This guide is safe to use on Korean wiis. You could just try to load some games on usb and see if they play. Be sure to read about error 003 and your Korean wii, along with preventative measures to take.
