    This updates to which version?
It doesn't update the system menu version, because it is not needed to simply update the system's IOS. The point is that this will occur as the result of updating the system menu, but the system menu is not simply effected by updating the IOS files.

THANK YOU mauifrog and everyone else involved with this... I did this a few months back without any issue =) I love being able to play imported games!

A friend says that he softmodded his Wii, and then it stopped reading discs. I searched but didn't find any instances where there was a link between the two, or any directions that said "do xxx or your Wii will no longer read discs." I feel like maybe it's a coincidence, and that one thing has nothing to do with the other. Is this suspicion correct? Or, is this an actual possibility? If so, is there something I can do to try to fix this?

Thanks very much for any and all input!!

Correct, it is possible to make mistakes that would yield a variety of undesired results. It is possible to have hardware failure occur at any point in time.
It should be obvious what this guide is intended to achieve, and it is accomplished successfully by a large percentage of ppl.

I don't understand why I NEED to do step 2 (besides PriiLoader)? I'm assuming it would downgrade my Wii to 4.1. What would it do to keep it at 4.3? I have no intention of backing up games.

So do you believe it's more likely that my friend made a mistake (would this be something I could fix?), or that the drive just decided to die around the same time?

Is there something I could look for on their Wii that might help diagnose/troubleshoot the issue?

So, my Wii will be able to read SDHC and the menu will say that he still on 4.0?
