    My personal theory …
The Wii’s DVD-Rom has drive chips on it labeled “Panasonic”. Also, the only brand of PC drive to read a Wii disc is made by LG. I believe that the Wii DVD drive is manufactured by Nintendo using a combination of LG and Panasonic parts.

In 1995, Panasonic, LG, and other major electronics corporations founded The DVD Forum. The DVD Forum is an international organization composed of hardware, software, media and content companies that use and develop the DVD and HD DVD formats. Most importantly, the DVD Forum created the DVD-R and its standards.

In 1997, Sony and other corporations founded the DVD+RW Alliance. In 2003, Microsoft officially backed the DVD+R format.

When a retail game is created, it’s factory pressed, therefore neither –R or +R in nature. It would only make sense that the hardware behind the Wii, LG / Panasonic with 14 years of DVD-R experience, would recognize the –R standard better due to its association / history / founding of the format.

    Either way …
After spending much time on WiiHacks.com, I’ve come to witness many issues being resolved by DVD-R media. The other staff can vouch for this statement also. To minimize errors, please use the –R media when recording discs intended for the Wii.

    This is some good info.
    Keep up the good work.

I have used Verbatim for most of my backup's
in the last shipping I tried a wild thing
Ordered an "white label" dvd-R - called Media Range
they are 50% cheaper, but carry the same mediacode wich is the same as Verbatim
    MCC 03RG20.
    Normally I pay $54 for 50 verbatim, now I recieved 100pc
No coasters / hickups yet ( maybe in the long run they'll fail - who know's )

I have lots of Verbatim DVD+R discs that I bought before Xmas. So I did not really want to go out & buy DVD-R discs & incur more expense, So I used Imgburn & used the change booktype setting from + to - On the Verbatims & burnt the game ISO files at 2.4 speed. I've burnt 10 discs with this method so far & all have worked flawlessly.

    The problem isn't that!!

Even if you buy cheap dvd-r/dvd+r like princo or emtec, they will work flawless!! Because your wii laser is in a good condition but over time if you insist in using cheap dvd-r or any dvd+r (cheap or not) your laser will dead faster or starts do reject dvd, games not loading properly, freeze in play etc etc.

So the problem is not the dvd+r reading at the moment but what it will do in a near future to your wii laser.

    hi,

Yep is the loader, running games using backup loaders, the reading of dvd's is more slow than 6x (normal speed). If you want normal speed use a modchip.

I suspect in the running time things for softmod wii's will be more complicated, there is been a massive adoption of this technique, because it's easy and free.

And nintendo will be addressing this concern more aggressively, that's is only my opinion.
