I've been using TDK | DVD-R 16x mostly with a side of Philips DVD-R 16x from time to time. I also purchase Wii games, so before I get into the whole laser reading issue, the game I've played the most has to be Rockband 2 and its a real disc of course not burned at all. All the hours clocked on my wii have been from that game about 90% I'd say. From having parties and good ole fashion single/multiplaying online since the game was launched for the wii I've clocked serious hours. I've also had my wii modded since 3.4 or so. Only recently has my Wii drive started with clicking noises, I'd assume thats from long durations of RB2. So nowadays I'm playing from my 8gb thumbdrive cycling through discs from time to time using WBFS manager. Avoiding if/when the drive goes

DVD-R has always been the default blank DVD's. The main problem here is, some DVD Writers actually prefer DVD+R as the default media (like my laptop), as for my desktop ,I own 2 Pioneers that will ONLY burn DVD-R and a laptop that will ONLY burn DVD+R, it has nothing to do with the type of media either check your manufacturer for details on your drive burning specs. Also a firmware update can solve issues if you are having any. Also OEM drives can differ from the actually product details seen on your manufacturers website.

I've burned thousands of CD's and DVD's over god knows how long of a period. I still have the first CD Data disc I ever burned when burners first came out, the Media was Memorex and to this day the disc still works and sits in one of those sleeve books, As opposed to other media such as CompUSA and Samsung media I still have where you can see the disc has deteriorated greatly. So quality is definitely a factor as for reading between DVD-R and +R, I dont think you will really notice a difference with your Wii. Although I can't be certain I've always used DVD-R. Either way both formats are bad and both were not made for your Wii, Factory Pressed is the best, although you can still have bad luck and burn your laser out like I almost did.

Thats correct, I've also heard that DVD+R DL are the ones to use, the DVD-R DL is just plain bad for anything. Also a layer break is required, but unsure of where the break needs to be. I'm not trying to downplay your preferred method of playing backups, but usb hdd is the way to go for playing backups.

You're kidding, right? (considering the thread title; content is immaterial).

at $6.99/ 25pk for DVD-R's, its pretty hard to beat them. as for DVD+ DL's, i have an xbox 360 aswell which uses those, so its not a big deal to use 1 or 2 on the wii

    Hi guys.

Ive been burning and playing my backup games for about 12 months now and all of a sudden im getting errors when trying new games, still using the same dvd-r's ive always used. (sorry can't remember the error codes off the top of my head, at work right now)

could this be a bad batch of dvds or do you think my laser is on the way out?
original and old backup games still read fine, its just the newer backups ive done.

    What won't work

That crappy Optiarc DVD burner that comes with most Gateway laptops. It has yet to burn a proper ISO to DVD for Wii games. Instead of investing in an external burner, I went for the HDD option.

Thanks for all the guides gentlemen. You've helped make my kid a happy guy with his reworked Wii. ;-)

Don't know if this bit of information will help but I'm using an HP DVD A DH16AAL (it's a compaq presario 5300F) and I've used Memorex DVD-R to burn some games and they've all worked perfectly. I used IMGBurn at 4x, and the only problems I've had are skipping videos, but that's prevalent in burned games. Now I'm using my WD 320gb external with USB Loader GX and no more DVD's for me.
