Why would anyone downgrade to 3.4 from the far more useful 4.0?

Why would anyone want to upgrade to 4.2 when they don't have to?

Upgrading to 4.2 itself will remove your cIOS249 and other 200+ IOS except for IOS250. Provided you have a later version of HBC installed it will be unnaffected by the change.

To be honest 4.1 is far more useful than 4.2.

You could use Waninkoko safe 4.2 updater, however I have no link to it as it would not be something I would ever recommend.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

    IOS50-64-v4889.wad system ios for 3.4
I love you for posting this!!!!!!!

It's been about 2 months now since I bricked my Wii. I thought I had unmodded it and did an auto update. -.-

I had the black screen of death and couldn't get to homebrew as I had deleted it. I also didn't have a nand back up. So all I could do is boot to boot2.

I tried everything I could get my hands on that seemed lagit. Your little download there was the last item I needed. My Wii is now fully unbricked!!! TY TY TY TY!!!!

In Preloader settings, is it safe to set "Ignore standby" to on? By default, it is off and I have to hold down the power button when I'm turning it off to bypass standby (I read that standby actually causes you Wii to potentially heat up).

You can turn standby off in the wii settings.
I see no reason for the preloader setting to not be safe. I would not use standby for the reason you mentioned.
