Follow the softmod guide linked below, or update mplayer.

Sorry, but I don't know what he did. All I know is that the Wii looks as though its restored back to the factory default settings and I can get into settings, go online etc, but can't get anything to read from the DVD drive.

Further to my earlier post, I updated my wiikey2 with the iso configuration disc and this updated my wiikey. I can't understand why the system was able to read this disc (albeit a gamecube disc as I understand) but even after the update I'm still unable to get any of my games (Pal or Ntsc backups) or original Pal discs to work and therefore can't run the exploit to get HBC back on. Is there anything else I can try?

When you go into wii settings, what firmware is displayed?

Did you update the wiikey2 firmware with the disc?

Are you able to remove the wiikey2? See if original games load?

The firmware is 4.3e. The wiikey 2 update I got from their site was version 1.3 and it read the disc no problems and updated the wiikey. As for removing the wiikey, it was soldered on by a modder and I've since lost his contact details. I was thinking about removing the wiikey to see if it would play the original discs, but would need to google how to do it without breaking it. Do you think the laser could be damaged if it's now only reading Gamecube discs? I just wish I knew if there was a hardware solution like replacing the drive or laser would perhaps fix the problem.

It is really hard to say, but you are not the first to have this issue after updating with a modchip installed.

I would try to hold + - at the health screen, then press A while holding. -see if you can load games

I would try to load the system menu, press home and load the system menu again -see if you can load games

I would try savemiifrii- see if you can load games.

I would find out what your son did to the wii prior to the update. Was it loading disc before he updated?

mauifrog I really appreciate your help and thanks so much for taking the time to suggest other options that I can try. Will do this later and let you know how it goes. As for what my son did before the update, he was playing Guitar Hero and said a message to update came on and he just went ahead without thinking that it would be a firmware update. It's so stupid as he's usually so careful about things like that. Before that, there's never been a problem running any backups and we used Neogamma to load NTSC discs. I realy do think you are right that the modkey and the system update together has scrambled the console or mucked up the laser. It looks like a hardware fix if none of your suggestions work, but am willing to try all other options before taking it apart and removing the wiikey or the drive.

Edit: Just one other question in relation to your suggestion:

"I would try savemiifrii- see if you can load games."

Could you tell me if that will work and load and read from an SD card and if there's a link on how to use it? Thanks

Savemiifrii will load the wiis recovery menu. You can load disc from there, perhaps it will work for you. You need a cheep gamecube controller to make it work. It will not load anything from the sd card.
