Loader: CFG, Wiiflow, GX
Working like a charm!
Brand: Seagate Expansion Portable External Hard Drive
Format: 100% FAT32
Firmware/Softmod: 4.2U, cIOS38Rev14
Loader: Configurable USB Loader
Configurable USB Loader works perfectly. All games load. Load times are fast. Games are stable.
USB Loader GX just loads/freezes to a black screen, not sure if it's HD-related.
I downloaded Seagate's drive manager to turn off the drive's spin down functionality. Didn't test with the functionality turned on.
Drive is USB powered, and I haven't experienced ANY issues.

silver/grey and white
CFG v60-222/Wiiflowv2.1 rev92
WESTERN DIGITAL WD Elements Desktop USB 2.0 1 TB External Hard Drive - black
Confirms this works (WBFS) with USB Loader GX
Bought this off pixmania...
I have been using the Cables Unlimited USB 2.0 to IDE & SATA Adapter for the past month (just got my wii for christmas), in conjunction with an old 250GB WD SATA HDD, without any problems directly caused by the usb device. I plug it in before I power on the console and it just works, I also have the red 25th anniversary wii with 4.3U firmware.
cIOS Installed (cIOSx r21, Hermes v5.1):
- 222 r65535
- 236 r65535
- 249 r21
- 250 r65535
- 254 r65281
I tested this device on a few different loaders. Sometimes GX will load a game fine, and play for a little bit (<30 min), but then the game will just freeze out of nowhere. This happens with the Six Flags Fun Park game that I know for sure. I think it's due to using IOS249 rather than 222. Since 222 utilizes USB2.0 and 249 doesn't, well there's the cause for the lock-ups. When it tries to read some data off the device via USB1.0 instead of 2.0, it can't get the data fast enough so the game doesn't know what else to do but just catch a brain freeze. It doesn't happen for all games, obviously, some games (like DKCR) work fine using 249 but then again there are others that don't work at all. I don't have too many games to test but Fantasy Aquarium World is one that doesn't work at all with 249 but works great with 222. I did some reconfig to GX's settings to make it load with 222 instead of 249 and it has shown much better progress. I've tested the Six Flags game for over an hour using 222 and it hasn't frozen on me once. I'm sure this is probably another reason everyone stopped using 249, I thought it was only because of the usb issue with the external hdd and an additional usb peripheral being connected at the same time.
The drive that's connected is formatted to NTFS with 512 byte cluster. I haven't tested with HBC since it doesn't support NTFS (FAT cluster size is too big for my taste) but the loaders I mentioned above detected the drive just fine. I did try WiiFlow as well but that one doesn't work at all for me. I tried the 249/250 version, and it loads to the main menu but says it can't find any partitions. When I try to select one, the only one available is WBFS1. I tried the 222 version, it just gives me a black screen and I have to press (hold down) the power button on the console to reset. I tried the 224 version, even though I don't have 224 installed just to see what happens. It loads... but instead of the menu it says I need to connect the usb drive into the wii (figures since there's no IOS to make anything function). I guess WiiFlow just isn't compatible with my firmware and/or installed cIOS yet. I'll be asking them for some assistance shortly.
All loaders were tested using their respective latest version, CFG=65b5 GX=2.0 WF=2.2r304.
LG HXD5U50GLR XD5 500GB 2.5'' HDD RED works perfect for me.
my wii : 4.3E black wii wii motion plus included edition softmoded.
cfg usbloader v64 : i changed the usb loader's setting for every game to 250 ios to each game. does not work with ios 249, don't know why.
HDD : formatted to fat 32 with WiiBackupManager0.3.6-build48 tool and convert them to .wbfs files. it also works with isos ( with the proper name). playing for hours dkc returns with no problems. also tested games like new super mario bros, goldeneye , zelda twilight and mario galaxy 2.
