    Size: 1TB
    Brand: Western Digital
    Model: My Book Essential
    Enclosure: External Powered
    Format: FAT32
    Firmware/Softmod: 4.3E
    Loader: cfgloader, usbloadergx, wiiflow
    Working (with SEVERE issues)

After disabling the vcd, spindown timer and formatting to fat32 homebrew channel and cfgloader can read the hard drive. (note: didn't test for long)
usbloadergx, wiiflow etc see the partition but crash trying to access it.
most other homebrew I tried such as wiixplore can't read the drive either.

Will be taking this hdd back and swapping for a WD Elements or a Seagate model.

Highly recommend to avoid any WD drives with SmartWare! It cannot be removed with current firmware!

edit: may of jumped the gun slightly :P swapped hdd for a WD Elements and had similar problems, Turns out I think it was the program I was using to format the hdd as fat32 was doing a dodgy job somehow (Wii Backup Manager 0.36 build 48) Formatted hdd with the HP USB tool and all seems to be well with the new hard drive Still don't like SmartWare one iota!

    Size: 1.5TB 7200RPM
    Brand: Seagate
    Model: FreeAgent Desktop
    Enclosure: External Powered
    Format: FAT32
    Firmware/Softmod: 4.1U ( Guide: Softmod Any Wii)
    Loader: cfgloader
    Working

    Model#: STAS1500500 also refered as ST315005FDA2E1-RK [ referance ] (last question answered)

followed this guide by Cile and Krank formated using the main option (Easeus Partition Master)
using CFG Loader Forwarder -DFCL installed via MMM (Multi Mod Manager)
I may have installed the Black Edition since I had downloaded both versions to the same folder. (not one of my best ideas)
downloaded cIOSx 249 Rev19/20 from this link following directions given.
using MMM once I chose IOS249 it installed and finished without error.

    * once I had formated I noticed the drive went to sleep at 15 minute intervals and realized I should have turned off this option so downloaded SeaTools for Windows installed on the pc then turned off power saving option to "never"

A suggestion, when first hooking this up to your pc, have the usb cable attached first then plug in the power supply and also when using on the Wii I plugged the usb cord on the same side I used for flash drives, once plugged in and you turn off your Will The usb hdd turns off also.

no problems to date. working well [08-13-2011]

    *Edit

As far as using this usb hdd drive as a backup to play games it works well using Configurable USB Loader anything else working I can not attest to.

    im thinking of buying this:

Seagate Expansion Portable 320GB 2.5 inch External USB 2.0 Hard Drive / Black - Computing at Play.com (UK)

Seagate Expansion Portable 320GB 2.5 inch External USB 2.0 Hard Drive / Black

will this work perfectly with config usb loader?

oh and to help i have a Freecom 400GB Classic Mobile 2.5" HDD that works flawlessly with my Wii, no problems whatsoever! just remember to format it to fat32! straight out the box its ntfs and games load to a black screen! so you must format to fat32 for this drive!

    great forum btw!

    Size: 400GB 2.5" usb 2.0

    Brand: Freecom

    Model: Freecom Classic Mobile

    Enclosure: External usb powered

Format: NTFS ( But You must format to FAT32, because the games on this HDD WILL NOT load in NTFS whatsoever!)

    Loader: cfgloader

Working, no problems or infrequent hdd errors (such as hdd cannot be found)

    works beautifully!

    If anyone's wondering, I just tested;
    - HP SimpleSave External Hard Drive 2TB (Model #: HPBAAD0020HBK-NHSN)
Works perfectly. Using 1.8 TB NTFS partition which is set to Primary and Active.
Works using CFG USB Loader v60 with cIOSX-rev21 using iOS38, iOS56 or iOS57 as base.

Played several games, ripped games from DVD. All perfect.

    Working -perfect.

i have a question regarding this drive and any help would be appreciated.
bought it around 3 months ago and started ripping my games to it.i added 9 games when purchased and it took less than an hour.added black ops in nov and it took ten mins.
the kids got new games for christmas and it took almost 20mins each.it was fifa 11 and just dance 2 and the game size isnt any bigger than black ops which only took ten mins.
the drive only has 12 games on it total.
question is when i updated the cios for black ops would the upgrade have affected the rip time of the drive?.
other than this the drive is perfect but just wondering if any one else using this h/d experienced similar issues?

Just wanted to add to this thread and say that the 2 TB My Book Essential External Hard Drive Model: WDBAAF0020HBK-NESN works just fine as an external USB storage unit for ISO's.

I bought the drive today and tested it. Enjoy..

    ADDED CILE
I just got a WDBAAF0020HBK-NESN and it doesn't work. It would load and see the games on the drive, but when I tried to launch a game it would just lock up or go back to the system menu. I tried on 2 seperate wii's and had the same problems with both. I found a firmware update and updated the firmware then reformatted the drive in WBFS and tried again and had the same problem again on both wii's.

I found a "virtual cd" update that kills the BS cd partition that's built into the firmware and tried again on both wiis and the same result.

Not sure what the person did above to get the drive to work, but there are no specs and it's the 1 and only post??? Does anyone have any suggestions and what I could try to get this drive to work?

I have a WD WDBAAF0010HBK-00 drive that I got at the same time (1tb only) and it works just fine yet the 2tb version won't boot a single game.

On a side note would it be possible to request specs from a person and have at least 2 post before adding a drive to the confirmed list?

My 250GB (really 232.8GB) Free Agent Seagate Drive works as Fat32 for wii backup loading.
