Speaking of which, CleanRip is typically recommended for ripping games to use in Devolution.

Also, because many people don't realize it, Devolution doesn't work with modchips.

How does he use a SDXC card on his Wii U? Nintendo's site specifically says (and other gaming sites have confirmed) SDXC does not work on Wii U. Have I been misled?

The Wii U doesn't work with exFAT, which is what SDXC uses by default. If you reformat to FAT32 then the system can read it just fine. Heck AFAIK the only actual difference between SDHC and SDXC is the label and the filesystem - I believe they're actually the same thing physically.

Neither do USB flash drives, and last time I checked they're typically cheaper than SD cards. I personally use a 16GB flash drive for my most commonly-played Wii and GameCube games.

I wish I knew this before buying a 16gb SDHC card for my Wii U...not that 16gb is too small for me as I don't use it store game ISOs, still, I'd like to have gotten the 32gb class 10 SDXC card I found for $15 at best buy.

That is true. For my old Wii I use a self powered 640gb HDD (because I use WiiMC to watch DVDs I've ripped to the HDD I needed something bigger than a flash drive).

Anyway, there are several options available and it's really up to work best for the individual. As you said, Devolution only needs system menu 4.0+, IOS 58 and, of course the program itself.

You could always blame Microsoft for not supporting the ext filesystems. Ext2 has been around long enough that if Windows supported it I wouldn't have been surprised if it became the standard for flash memory instead of Fat32, and therefore there wouldn't really be any reason to create SDXC and instead SDHC w/ ext2 would have probably gone all the way to its actual hardware limit, which is the same as SDXC at 2TB.

EDIT: Apparently SDXC does allow cards to run at over 104MB/s. However, it's not like that would have hurt backwards compatibility like the current exFAT issue does.

Yeah. I may just have to pick up a decent sized SDXC card in the future just so the Wii U (whenever I mod it) won't constantly bug me to format the drive. Sure, I could keep the USB drive unplugged till I turn the system on, or I could mess with the MBR signature/partition table but I'm skeptical about that as I've lead it can lead to major trouble with the drive.

Edit: yes, the SDXC card I initially got (returned cause Nintendo.com said it wouldn't work) said it's transfer speed was *up to 300mbps.

why is this thread not recommended?
    :-/
anyway, I have a rather strange issue with the current USB-loader GX (got it from this thread and it says there is no update available):
I want to install my GC games to USB, compressed. But I cannot get the loader to install them compressed! I activated the option, but it always installs 1.36GB. It worked once (Beach Spikers), but since then it only installed full games. I tried turning it on and off and restarting the wii between the steps, even turned it on again. But to no avail. Is this a common problem? I did not find anything regarding this on the web.

It's not that this thread isn't recommended per se; eventually and over time the good ones (like this one) do get moved. Depends on the subject matter and how good a guide it is, not to mention popularity. This is how Dios Mios got moved from here to there.

Everyone make this guide popular so it can be moved to the "Recommended" section

I'll do my part by keeping the guide up to date.

@Tosnic: Devolution doesn't work with compressed games anyway...sorry.

There's a new version of GCMM that apparently fixes some important save bugs with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess...or something.
