But I thought that with any USB Loader out there, DM(L) support or not, has to communicate with the drive and tell it that there is a disc in it to fool the Wii into booting the game ?

If there is a GC game in the disc drive DM 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 will play it from the disc drive, If there is no GC game in the disc drive the NoDisc patch is auto so it plays the GC game from USB, it does not need the disc because the patch is auto. With DM 2.0, we had to put it ON, now it is auto because it checks the drive, this is why we have to keep the NoDisc to OFF with the new DM and the new USB Loaders.

I don't understand why my games aren't working then ... I know these are valid rips and installations, I can play them at a very low frame rate in dolphin. If you want, I can get a picture of what it looks like on the inside, where the brown clamp thingy is missing.

Because the DM 2.1,2.2, 2.3, 2.4 NoDisc patch cannot go ON until it check the drive to make sure there is no disc in the drive.
With DM 2.0, you could put the NoDisc patch to ON, not anymore

I'm fairly certain that is the problem, if your disc drive is not connected correctly or at all it wouldn't work, my understanding from the reading I've done is your disc drive needs to at least be somewhat functional for USB loading games to work (Wii or GC). I could be mistaken, if anyone wants to correct me on this by all means, please do

Anyway that's what I've read, no working (at least partially) disc drive = no USB loading games.

Hmm ... I think what I'll do here is rip the drive out of my sister's Wii and place it in mine XD I'll tell you how that plays out.

Haha, that's one way. As long as you can connect it in your Wii without issue it should work, but do let us know.
