When updating your loader deleting the Config files is a must. The old cfg files almost always cause problems.

This thread is still very new but it compliments USB Loading GC games very nicely. Check it out guys, you might like it

What is the most likely to improve usb hdd compatibility -- new versions of dios mios, or new versions of usb loader software? Why do some drives work, when other similar drives (sometimes by the same company and with similar design) do not?

They both help improve compatibility (sometimes, depends on what was added to the new revision).

Is there a big difference in compatibility between different usb loaders when it comes to DM and HDDs? Do you expect compatibility to increase rather quickly?

Edit: Would it be worth my while to try older versions of DM?

I've noticed that most of the compatibility problems are hardware (at least, I think they are). Unsure if any mod or patch or update will increase this.

When DML was new, games would load on HDD just fine, but others failed due to software compatibility issues which were ultimately resolved over the year.

Nothing you can really do with hardware compatibility, other than get new hardware. If you're looking for a new hard drive, I can show you what I bought last week (1.5TB for under $100 from amazon) which works great for both Wii and GC games.

Any idea what makes particular hardware incompatible?

I picked up a self powered 640gb Seagate Free Agent Plug-and-Play drive for $50 last Christmas and it works perfect with all my Wii and GC games....well actually there's one Wii game I used to have that I never could make work right (Metroid Prime Trilogy).
