Exclamation Sony Playstation 3 Official Firmware 3.56 Released

Today, a new official PS3 firmware was released by Sony. As expected, all keys were changed and it disables homebrew. It has also been reported that while entering factory mode is still possible, you can’t exit it with the Lv2diag.self that used to work previously. If you wish to keep using homebrew software, do not update to 3.56 for now.

PS3 Firmware 3.56 Includes a Rootkit

Reports around the globe seem to indicate that Sony is up to no good… The pros have dug deep, dissecting firmware 3.56 to the fullest, and what they found may surprise you… Then again it’s Sony, so maybe you won’t be surprised at all. Allegedly Sony has included their own “rootkit” so to speak, which allows them to execute remote code upon login. What code exactly? Well that can apparently range from verifying system files, detecting custom firmware, searching for any installed homebrew to deactivating the system. And the executed code can change at anytime — without a firmware update — Sony controls it all on their end.
Below is a quoted IRC snippet from Mathieulh:
<Mathieulh> 3.56 has nice new stuffs in there :P
<Mathieulh> like remote code execution upon login
<Mathieulh> yummy :P
<Mathieulh> 3.56 pretty much has a built in psn rootkit
<Mathieulh> don’t tell me I haven’t warned you
<Mathieulh> the server awaits a proper reply
<Mathieulh> and that reply isn’t in the firmware
So I gotta ask: Are you scared?
Thanks Shalesy for the 411.

For those who are curious about the new PS3 security, it seems Sony has implemented something in 3.56 I mentioned here a few weeks ago that is the same as Microsoft uses to detect and ban 360's.

Mathieulh just posted about it on IRC.

Essentially Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect. This can do whatever Sony wants it to do such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates and as the code executes remotely there is no reliable way to forge the replies.

Whilst it is possible to patch or remove this code from the firmware this will likely mean the end of playing CFW online (as PSN can just check before login that this is active) or at the very least mean it will be even easier for Sony to detect and ban users.

Judging from the fact that people can still connect using the proxy method it seems Sony hasn't activated any of this yet but the functions are there in the new firmware.

The proxy method no longer works apparently. Dont know if there are any new CFWs coming out yet as Sony is being a bunch of babies looking to take any/all hackers to court. According to PSX Scene, they are saying that Geo "Unlawfully Accessed his PS3 System". So basically, we purchased the System, but we are not allowed to do what we want with it. Meaning we do not own devices we paid for with our hard earned $$$. Sucks dont it.
In the words of another Forum Thread member:
If I want to play Pong on my PS3, Im gonna play some Mutha@#$%in Pong!!!
I didn't do it!!!! I swear!!!!!
But if I did, I was justified!!!!
