Sony Files PS Jailbreak Lawsuit In US

Sony Computer Entertainment America has filed a lawsuit against an online distributor of the new PS3 Jailbreak modchip, which allows users to circumvent PS3's copy protection and play backed-up titles copied to the systemís hard drive.

The platform holder has accused the modchip seller, Zoomba LDC, of copyright infringement, violations of the digital millennium copyright act and trademark infringement, Kotaku reports.

Sony previously succeeded in getting a temporary injunction blocking the sale of PSJailbreak in Australia.

Moved to PS3 section -- once again, we thank you (and hate Sony).

It's only a mater of time before the technology leaks out and someone figures out how to make the firmware work on a thumb drive similar to the Magic Stick for the PSP.

I saw (don't remember where) that the data that this modchip has, was uploaded or will be and it is supposed to work with any USB Drive.

Waninkoko's working on the exploit. No idea if he has the data from this modchip, but I'd be surprised if the info wasn't moving it's way around the right circles by now.

The answer for every breakthru by the suits: try to stuff the genie back in the bottle via lawsuit. Stuff like this don't stay buried and it has just as many legitimate uses as those its detractors seem to forget out. This is not a piece of pirate technology; technology is neither good nor evil --- it's in the usage thereof.

Ya, just look at what happened to file sharing after the big Napster lawsuits. It exploded and no hope for stopping it now.

A far easier comparison CSS (Content Scrambling System) for DVDs.
