    Ps3 hack

Ok, I now have to write something about all this cause now Sony said they are getting involved in this hack claim and people are posting stuff on sites such as "Sony has nothing to worry about no one wants to spend the big money to copy blue ray dvd's " or " it takes to long to burn a blue ray" or "homebrew people should hook up with Sony"...... The list of people being stupid or ill-informed is ridiculous... To set people strait are you ready for this.....Go rent a game ......Put it in your modded ps3.... start your home brew and copy it to a hard drive..... a 1 tb hard drive will hold about 50 games....and the price of that dedicated harddrive....hmmmmm ...the same price for a blue ray burner...It would most likely be setup the same as a wii... Because a hacker wants to be cost effective... So you can get a lot of games for a very little price... I just don't see the reason why anyone would want to go through all the paces of ripping a game getting it to burn correctly and then play that dvd on a regular basis.. heaven forbid it gets too many scratches and you have to repeat this process... If I'm wrong or out of line with this let me know... I apologise for my rant....

Yeah the Blu Ray Writer's are expensive, and the disks aint cheap but you CAN get the media for £2 or less per disk.

I'm not advoctaing it, but this is the same as it was back in the late 90's. Music CD's cost upto £20 each, and people got sick of paying it. New PC's were equipped with a CD-Rom and a Floppy drive as standard for a decent spec PC (the CD-Rom was often an optinal extra at first). The writers weren't cheap, the media was still varying in prices, but a few people splashed out the cash and started to rake it in selling Music CDs for £5 a pop. Profit was minimal, but because the price was so low turnouver was maximised. Everyone has a 'mate' from the pub or work that could 'sort ya out' with the latest CDs at knock-off prices.

Same happened right at the beginning with DVDs too. Now look at the price of CDRs and DVD-/+R disks. Every PC/Laptop comes with a DVD/CD Writer instead of a CD-Rom becuase they are so cheap. People's grandparents are whipping Lada GaGa onto disk to play in their Volvo when they go on a Daytrip to the Zoo.

Technology has evolved and along comes the Blu Ray. I know that the intention of the hackers is not piracy, but more the challenge of saying "I did that me!", but the general population WILL pirate the Software. And you will get some folks that will spend £1,000 setting their PC up with Dual Blu-Ray Writers and a stock of Full-Face Printable BD-R disks & cases.

As soon as they get the chance, they will be at work ot the pub telling the lads what they can do, and within a few weeks he's burning games off left right and centre for his mates kids - right after he has charged them '£50 to chip it with 2 games'.

As for the individual's like ourselves that just want to enjoy entertainment without being bled dry through our wallet, we want to have the HDD to run the games from. A 1TB HDD is bar far cheaper than a Blu-Ray Writer at the minute, and with the technology evolving so quickly, the prices of HDD's will fall quicker than the prices of BD-R's.

At the end of the day, there is always a continual outlay to maintain a stock of games. If you plan to rent a game and rip it to your HDD there is the cost of that, about £3.50 - £5.00 per game (any console). If you wanted to burn a game to DVD-R you have the cost of the disk, the case and the ink - roughly about £2.00 - £2.50 per game. Thats not including the cost of your internet connection at about £0.50 per game.
The clever man has the HDD and donwloads his own ISO's, and this will still be the most cost-effective way of playing backups on a PS3 should it happen. But you'll have to make sure your on a good internet package to download at a reasonable rate.

I'm looking forward to the PS3 being hacked and anxiously await any new news. I will be reading the blog daily for a little while.

This is exactly what I was trying to say, rip from retail disc thru the ps3 to a usb hdd. But for some reason people think that you have to download 50GB worth of data and then buy blu-ray everything, wouldn't be worth it with so much expense. Just have to wait and see.

There are only 3 games I can think of that would definately need a Dual Layer. MGS4, FF XIII and GT5. The rest of the games won't fill a single layer disk.

Its the games with the 1080p output that will be the biggest games. Lets see if someone creates a decent compressor just like we have for the Wii. After all, the PS3 can only accept a FAT32 HDD at the moment can't it? Not much use since a single layer DVD-R is greater than 4GB.

ehmmm... i disagree... games with 1080p output only have better graphics (yeah, the textures are more detailed but how much space will it take?) but the real space-taker are the movies. I have seen tons of crappy games which take up 4.5 gb of space in wii and 90% of these are cutscenes. Think of smash bros brawl. 4.5 gb of movies, and they were cut down to fill only one single layer disc
