    internal HDD for ps3 question

So I have the ps3 super slim 12 GB console of course there is no drive in it.I bought the Western Digital 2.5 SATA3 5400RPM 8MB Cache OEM hard disk and I am waiting on my mounting bracket I bought online my questions are......

Can I install the HDD without the mounting bracket for now till my bracket comes in ?
I did talk to the guy at the store he said the bracket was only for vibration is that correct

And do I just install the drive and that's it ?
I seen videos online of people installing the HDD and then going to settings showing that their hard drive was showing up

I just want to make sure before installing any help is appreciated

    thanks

I would imagine that the 12gig of internal space is probably a small Solid State Drive that fits into the 2.5 drive slot vs. being separate memory and leaving the hard drive slot empty.

Just in case, what I would do first is take a USB Hard drive and use it to back up the system.

Once it is backed up, if I remember from when I installed my second hard drive into the PS3, the case itself has the brackets that are needed to be installed. You shouldn't need external hardware like trying to slap a 2.5" drive into a 3.5" drive in a PC.

You may expect to see the SSD in place, if so take it out and put in your new drive. Then go through the process of restoring the data to the hard drive using the backup you made.

If there really is no hard drive in the system, then you should be able to put the new one in and then you should be good.

I did this with a launch-PS3 vs. the new slim model, but I would not expect much to be too different since the OS is still the same.

Its non removable flash memory and it gets disabled when you install a new HDD, so you might have a new 500GB HDD in the PS3, but you also have dormant flash memory, sitting being wasted because of Sony's silly rules.

So sounds like you may want to make a USB backup of the data in case it gets lost when you add a hard drive.

no I don"t want to make a backup as sony states on the site that everything gets transferred over to the HDD once its installed I just want to know till the bracket comes what can I do to get the ps3 up and running with the HDD like I read online off the sony forum that this woman used rubber which is stupid I know not to. could I maybe screw 4 screws into the corners of the HDD to have it propped up and set in place then later once the bracket comes in feb pull it out and install it the way it is supposed to be installed the ps3 will be sitting uphigh with no vibration to knock it out of place what would you guys recommand doing till then
