Hi,
I have been looking into buying an xbox 360 and modding it - but I am now considering buying a PS3 instead (I'm deciding).
From what I've seen and read here, you need a firmware of 3.55 or less to jailbreak. I was wondering if anyone knew what firmware/s I could expect to have if I bought a brand new PS3 now.
Does anyone have an idea of what firmware the current PS3s have?

You're looking at at least firmware 3.7 preinstalled (my guess since I knew someone who bought one in January with that on it).
So if I bought a PS3 now it would not be jailbreakable yet?
Do you know how long it roughly takes for that forward to become jailbreakable?
Maybe I should stick to buying a 360...
If you find a bundle that comes with a game that has a lower firmware it will have the firmware the game needs. Example: the cod black ops bundle comes with firmware 3.50.
Or you could find a used one on 3.55. Like on fleabay or craigslist.
The only downsides are:
1. You will not be able to play games that need a higher firmware. There are a few with fixes, but for the most part the new games won't work. Unless you give some more $ to the greedy developers of the True Blue dongle.
Another way to play newer games would be to buy a flasher and dual boot. Then you could play your original discs on OFW and CFW for other backups.
2. No online gaming with a cfw ps3. Unless you dual boot with a flasher and even that way is not from backups.
To tell you the truth, as much as I love my PS3, I would recommend getting a XBOX360. I have one of those too and if I can't play a game on my PS3 with cfw3.55, I get it for the XBOX. I flashed my drive and backup my games to DL DVDs. I can still play online with them too.

If u buy a brand new PS3 you can down grade it from 3.55 or ⬇ from www.ps3haxnetwork.net or www.lobbymodders.com
If you buy a brand new PS3, it will come with a higher firmware than 3.55. Since the firmware is higher than 3.55 from the factory, you can not downgrade.Quote:

You can only downgrade a PS3 to 3.55 if it came on that firmware (or lower) from the factory. The newer PS3s are being sent with newer firmware, so you can't downgrade them to a firmware they were never on.
i.e. If you want to downgrade a PS3 to 3.55, it's going to have to be an older PS3, not the new ones.
EDIT: I've also got a question of my own - i've been looking around for second-hand PS3s and I'm aiming to grab an old one that hasn't been updated (or at least can be downgraded). I will ask the seller when they bought the PS3 (this will give me a lead) but I'm hoping someone can inform me of what year I'm looking for (2010, 2011 etc). What is the year in which the newer PS3s were sent with new firmware?
