ps3 help

Ok i got a ps3 with 2 pads for 40pound broken i only got it for the pads realy but gering the ps3 is a bonus

Any way the problemen is that when i switch the ps3 on it doesnt show up on the screen and i cany get into recovery mode some times i can get the ps3 on Snd i got a part off eBay for the on/off button and thats working ok now

The cables are ok as i use the ones off my ps3 slim

The pic comes up fuzzy and colourful and i got in recovery mode and it frozen with the pic going fuzzy

Any ideas

Cracks in the solder from under the GPU will cause graphic problems. It is caused from overheating. A reflow of the GPU and the CPU would most likely fix it.

thanks, im going to get some artic silver past ans isopropyl alcahol and then sort it out and hopefuly it will fix it its the only thing i can think of thats the problem

i finaly got in recovery mode and restored the ps3 but that didnt fix it so looks like im stripping the ps3 and adding the past to the gpu cpu lo

i find that after a reflow i use the copper shims ,it works 9 out of 10 times.

quick question, with me not having the YLOD do i need to use a heat gun or can i just add the thermal past, i have a heat gun but not with the temp adjustment on it

You still need to heat the solder under the GPU. That is the chip for graphics it says RSX on it. The no clean flux you put on (use a lot) and let it drain under the chip, then when you heat the solder the flux helps it rejoin.

There is also a penny fix, but it's kinda a nigga rig, but I have gotten it to work. You have to put the thermal paste on the chip, Then thermal paste the penny's and put them on top of the RSX chip(lining them up evenly on each corner) and thermal paste the heat sink. When you put it back together the penny's push the chip onto the board for a better connection. You can look on youtube for a better explanation of where to put the penny's. I did it on a slim that had no video, and the first time I did it, I was getting distorted graphics like you explained. Then I took it back apart and lined up the penny's better and made sure it was tight when I put it back together. It worked great after that.

But the reflow is the correct way to fix the problem.

Ok just finished putting the artic silver past on and put ps3 together started up fine then switched off and started up fine the ps3 was quiet as a mouse and not hot then I get a message on the ps3 saying its to hot and now I got the YLOD so will have to strip it again and use the heat gun but need to find one with temp settings on it then should be good to go

just did another reflow on the ps3 and put more artic silver past on then put 4 coins on the RSX chip and put paste on them and put ps3 together again start ps3 up never showed pic on screen, switched off then back on again started up fine so switched off and back on again still get the black screen with av no signal on tv each time i turn on and off so im at a loss here lol, could it be a hdd problem ?? the ps3 has not got the YLOD

If it is a hard drive problem you will be able to get into the recovery menu.

So it came on ok the second time you turned it on? The coins have to be copper. You can also bend the clamps a bit to give it more pressure on the chip. Like this guy does at 7:02 of this video. Don't bend them too much though and be careful not to strip the screw holes when screwing the clamps back down.

i will try that with them by bending them and will need to get some flux ...

ye when it starts up it runs fine but when trying to start it up other times im not getting any picture on the tv so its driving me mad lol iv took the ps3 appart 3 times now lol
