As far as I know you need a Disc Drive that some what works, for it to read/play from the HDD.
Hi, complete Wii noob here.
Just about to buy a Wii for my kids, after reading the softmod guide I have some questions I was hoping somebody could help me with.
I noticed that the guide says in a few places to have xxx free blocks of NAND, how do you check this or is this even something to be concerned with for a virgin Wii? How do you free up NAND if needbe?
Chapter 1 Part 2 says to prepare the SD card, does this mean format? Should I format the SD card between each step or is deleting the folders/files sufficient?
I assume that bootmii, hbc, cios and priiloader are saved to NAND, is this correct? If this is the case how does bootmii back up NAND if it resides/runs from NAND or does it only run off the SD card?
I assume that apps such as USB Loader GX etc reside on the SD Card? Is it possible to have them reside on the USB HDD? If so, how do you get the channel/forwarder to look for the app on the HDD?
Thanks for a great guide, can't wait to try it out.
I can't answer all of your questions, but if you are buying a fresh new Wii to mod for your kids, you won't have to worry about NAND space. It will have enough space free for you. That's just for peopel who may have already bought things from WiiShop, taking up the extra space.
You should give the SD card a good format once, we recommend this tool: PanasonicSDFormatter.rar. You can try just deleting the files from that point to save time if you want, but if things gives you problems, then you should do another reformat and try again.
I'm not sure how Bootmii (or other tools) work, I just know that they do :)
You can install apps onto a HDD by creating an \apps\ directory, the same as if you were running things off of SD card. I don't use loaders at all, so I can't answer how to repoint them. I have priiloader set to launch my USB Loader on boot, and if I have to do anything else, I exit to HBC and do everything from there. It's smart enough to use the HDD for things if my SD card isn't in the system (which it is most of the time). HB apps are generally so small, there isn't a noteicable benefit to HDD loading instead of SD loading. I also have a class 10 32 gig card, so that helps with the SD card access speed as well.
Yes you can just delete the files/folders as that is what I've done each time I followed the guide.
Just to speculate a little, backing up the nand is possible as bootmii is not writing to the nand. Restoring however is a different story depending on if you were able to install bootmii as an ios or boot2. As far as I know, it is more difficult to restore the nand using ios than it is when installed to boot2.
When it comes to apps, it is just better to run them from the SD as not all apps are fully compatible with USB hard drives. Load times are another reason as they may be faster from the SD over the hard drive (this all depends on each device).
Hi... I'm completely new to modding the Wii, and think I mess up somewhere on Chapter 2. I downloaded and extracted the mod pack. The Wad install stage froze...
Here's what I did:
- verified the wad files with the recommended program
- put the SD-card in the Wii
- went through HBC to the Wii Mod v3.2 program
- loaded the Wad Manager (WM)
- watched as the WM went through some wads
- WM stopped
- left the console for about 5 minutes... no change
- decided to restart the console
- everything turns on, HBC still runs... not bricked
- try to run WM again and now it either (a) freezes upon "Retrieving file list..." or "No files found" message is reported
- the wad files are still on my SD-card...
I really have no idea what to do with this. I can see the files on my comp, but the WM doesn't find them or it freezes up. Is there another way that I could do this?
My Wii version is 4.3U.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I just put Wad Manager v1.7 by Waninkoko on my SD card and the following happened:
- requested to choose an IOS, chose IOS236
- specified source decive "Wii SD Slot"
- immediate fail (not freeze though)
+ Mounting device, please wait... ERROR! (ret = -1)
Should I try a different version or IOS? Seems like the same thing happened where whatever app couldn't find my SD card (despite it being loaded from it). Any thoughts?
After trying to do the wad installation with Wad Manager v1.7, my HBC is blank. It remains blank until I remove and re-insert my SD-card...
When I try IOS249, I have to select NAND emulator device... but my WiiMote is disabled and I have to restart.
I might have found an alternative to the SD-card for my case... if I load the wad files on a USB, it seems to find it through Wad Manager v1.7.
I'll try another SD-card before going to the USB route, since it would be ideal to use the Wii Mod and have it go through all the wads in a batch installation.
