I am having same problems as OP with the Gamestop (Not genuine Nintendo) Wiimotes.
Disconnects when going into HBC and USB Loader GX, but works fine in games and System Menu.
I'm bumping this back up, I'm trying to figure this out myself.
I'm trying to pin point the problem in my thread.

More and mores users having the same issue... sound like it happens when using a new MM+ with old console. The post in #23 has more systematic description.

I noticed that the new remote does not disconnect when using games backed up on my usb memory stick,
but the problem just started occuring when i plugged in a usb HDD (WBFS format).
I am thinking the issue lyes somewhere in the hardware or usb logic.
I am using a 4.3U brand new console.
USB Loader GX (latest)
Probably IOS58 for HBC (pretty sure)
IOS222 for USB Loader GX
