Thought I'd try an old Pioneer DVD-106 slot load, and oddly enough it recognized the Wii disc in Friidump. Wouldn't rip it, but it recognized it; there's still more hope out there.
I found this one on e-bay.

I really don't know if it works but i'm really tempted to buy it.
When i insert a disc it says Gamecube disc detected
DVD-RW wont work?
Excellent guide, thanks. I just bought 1 x 8163B and 1 x 8164B - I only meant to buy one so got a spare one now I guess. I will try both as they should both do it.
Go to the nearby Blockbuster store and they're using their DVD player all day long, playing movies over and over. They don't replace their DVD player every few weeks just because it's been used a lot.
For years and years, my XBox, XBox 360, PS3 all got nearly constant use watching movies, playing games, and ripping games to an internal HDD. That's what they're made to do!
Using the logic that you'll wear out your Wii so don't use it is like saying you will walk to the grocery store instead of drive because you don't want to wear out your car's tires.
You bought the thing... use it! Everything has a shelflife. Your Wii may last you 14 months if you are really careful with it. Your neighbor's Wii may last six years with constant use of the DVD drive.
I have already a bunch of backed up Wii games on DVDR.
Do I still need one of the LG drives if I want to copy such discs, or can any DVD drive read the DVDR copies of Wii games?
