far from my area of expertise but i don't think storage space should be a problem. A lightweight app could be developed to provide a nice front end interface only, with streaming media playback functionality over wifi
though im not sure how the Wii memory/processor would cope with on the fly decoding and playback of mpeg media for example, i think thats where the restraints would be
do the embedded GeOS apps have access to the full performance of the wii?
edit: scrap that, just been reading a post on lifehacker about using orb, the wii is indeed not powerful enough to render full screen video... so its a no no
mmmm i didnt think about mpeg decoding. but i think the backend of a large project would have to be an operating system that allows for hardware upgrades. does anyone know if apple tv box has more powerful hardware than wii? boxee does look good i have to admit.
Apple tv eh? Gona check it out. Thanx for the advice. So, the old first generation xbox has more video and processing power than a Wii? Network speed shouldn't be a problem if you have the wired network adapter.
K. I just did a quick comparison of the specs and unless i'm mistaken, The Wii lacks memory, but is quite adiquate in all other aspects. XBMC's install file is 70mb full featured, so someone could probably make a toned down version smaller. Dam, if i knew any programing, I'd be all over this.

If i can get VLC running, it may be an answer.
VLC can be used as a server, if memory serves me correctly, so you could set it up on the pc to serve files to the Wii.
But i prefer to use the right tools for the job. i watch a lot of Hi-Def downloaded TV files (720p) and I know the Wii just couldnt cope with them no matter what you use to play them with. I have a very small PC for my media and the Wii for games.
