If you want a solution to playing GC games on a HDD you have two options. You can hardmod and buy a WODE or a SunDriver. It seems like you don't want to go that route. Softmod wise you could use Swiss (There is a link in my sig) but it's early in development and I've personally only been able to get two games working thus far.
Drop the WODE idea unless you are going to buy one. You need the hardware too...Not just the software. Go to their site and do some reading or wait until one of our WODE users tells you how far off base you are.

Swiss works because it uses the GC memory spot instead of other options. Go ahead, try to continue with this but remembar that Crediar gave up on it and he has a history of Wii hacking. Can you finish what he started without giving up also?
ok so can the wode load GC games with 100% compat or close to it?
and can you use the wode with a softmod? ,and use a loader like wiiflow of cfg usb loader or usb loadergx to load the gc games and with cover art with the wode?or do you have to use their loader software/onscreen gui menu,or the lcd?i thought i read about it being able to be used with usb loaders like usbloadergx and wiiflow for wii games but not sure about GC backups though
also i though of another possible solution ,does anyone know if you could load a GC game backup from an ext usb hdd if you use one of those GC memory cards that have an sd slot in them for GC homebrew?,i never got into the GC mod scene ,so i dont know much about it,but i would assume it would let you use homebrew on the GC ,maybe to load backups from optical or maybe even from the newtwork adapter on the GC,since the GC has no usb,i dont know what there is for homebrew for GC,but could this device be used on wii to use GC homebrew, like maybe to load GC backups from usb hdd?something like how you can use a ps2 swapmagic disc in a back compat ps3 to boot ps2 backups from an ext usb hdd?
like you said you cant use the sd or usb in GC mode on the wii ,but you could boot homebrew from an sd plugged into a GC memory card ,plugged into the GC memory card slot on the wii, does anything exist to do this?or is anyone working on a homebrew GC usb loader ?
i would think that nobody ever developed a usb loader for GC since it had no USB ,but i dont think it could be that hard to make a usb loader for GC /wii
The WODE tricks your Wii into thinking it has a disc in it so expect 100% compatibility to my knowledge. I'm no expert on the WODE but have seriously contemplated picking one up in the past. You are completely fine using both a WODE and having your Wii softmodded. If you own a WODE there is no point in using a USB loader program on the Wii and your HDD would be plugged into the WODE anyways. WODE users have at least one GUI loader program that I know of (WODEFlow) and if I'm not mistaken it loads GC games directly through it.
As far as the second part about the SD Gecko. It can be used for GC ISO loading via Swiss off of an SD card. There is a link in my sig to a guide I wrote on it. Swiss is capable of using a HDD but not your current USB HDD. You would need and IDE drive W/ it's own power supply and a special EXI-IDE adapter which would plug into one of your GC memory card ports. And it's a beta program so compatibility is far from good and even the games that run seem plagued with problems. Probably because it is being developed with the GC in mind and anything that works on the Wii is kind of a bonus.
