Wii Stopped Reading Burnt Media
Hi. This is my first post, but I've had my Wii softmodded without issue since July of 2009. Before I begin, I'll say that I have used the search function and I have googled the problem (I've been looking for the solution for a few days now) a lot, and I've either all suggestions that I've found either didn't work or were irrelevant to my situation.
So, like I said, July of 2009 I softmodded my Wii, backed up some games, and NeoGamma and everything else has been working fine ever since. Around Christmas of 2009, I got New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and to get it to work I had to change a few things (I don't remember exactly what I updated, it's been nearly a year, but I do remember that I at least installed a new version of NeoGamma. Nothing major, though). Everything was working fine.
Just this past week, I figured I'd play some Mario Kart, because it's a pretty fun game. I had the DVD handy, and when I popped it in, the Wii couldn't read it (I usually use the actual Wii Disc Channel to see if it recognizes the game before I bother launching NeoGamma). Surprisingly, the DVD I've been using for months wasn't loading. Just to make sure, I launched NeoGamma, and it gave me the 721 error. I had a newer version in the homebrew channel (NeoGamma R8, I believe), which gave me the 1048 error. "No problem, the disc is probably ruined," I thought. So I burned another. Same problem. "Ok, so the disc got ruined and the .iso somehow got corrupted on my computer. Again, not a problem." Got a new .iso, burnt it again (4x speed, I do believe - Memorex DVD-R's, what I've always used for my Wii), same problem. So I went through my pile of games, and all of the games I've been playing (without problems) that were burnt weren't working. Here's the kicker, though: Original discs were working fine.
So, the first thing I did was reinstalled IOS's, updated anything that needed updated, and all of that kinda stuff. Still no go. My final resort, I backed up all the save data I could and did a NAND restore. Nothing.
I'm assuming that there's something wrong with my drive, and that I'm going to have to get an HDD, but before I spend the money I thought I'd may as well post here to see if there's something blatantly obvious that I'm missing. Again, between November-December 2009 to now (11/9/2010), I've changed absolutely nothing. No system menu updates, no IOS updates, no NeoGamma updates, nothing.
I bought the Wii in April 2007, so it doesn't have any fancy anti-piracy features. And, again, Memorex DVD-R's; I've had no problems with them until now.
Thanks in advance.
TL;DR: Bought a Wii in April, 2007. Softmodded it July '09. Everything worked great. All of a sudden all my burnt games (Memorex DVD-R) weren't working, and no newly burnt games (4x speed) worked either. Original discs worked fine. Updated IOS's and Homebrew Channel, didn't fix the issue. Restored NAND, still no go. Am I missing something or should I buy an HDD and load the games from there?
