Wiihacks Guides/Tutorials: Linking or Copy-and Paste Requests
Welcome to WiiHacks and thank you for coming by this Forum to introduce yourself and your site.
Sites occasionally want to either provide a link to WiiHacks guides and tutorials or wish to post a copy of a guide/tutorial on their own site. The easiest method that best serves your own membership is a link to our guides and tutorials.
Our guides and tutorials are dynamic and are often frequently updated to reflect user needs, software or hardware changes, Wii console changes, and Nintendo anti-modding activities. As such, a simple static copy-and-paste risks doing your members a disservice in posting a potentially outdated and possibly even dangerous guide. The latter situation has occurred where a past practice was rendered not only useless, but dangerous after a change Nintendo made to the Wii console.
Accordingly, sites that prefer the cut-and-paste option might consider providing a somewhat static copy of a WiiHacks guide, but also provide the link and both warn and instruct members to check the original source before following the guide. An alternative is to accept the responsibility to keep your site's copy of the guide updated at all times.
It is the need to maintain an up-to-date guide for your members that creates the most common impediment to a simple copy-and-paste solution. The possibility of an outdated guide on your site causing member bricks or other damage is one that needs to be addressed before you proceed with this method.
We often counsel members looking for a good guide, independent of site, to consider: is the guide current, is the guide maintained-updated as needed, is the guide supported in the event of questions or problems. These are factors you need to address as well in order to best serve your own members.
While the rights to the guides belong to the site owner, out of courtesy, we also request permission from the guide's original author when an outside site requests permission to either post or link the guide with credit given to the author and WiiHacks. So, if you wish to proceed, please specify the guides of interest (best to also provide the link to minimize confusion with similarly names guides) and the original authors will be contacted before we proceed to requesting permission from the site owner.
We do appreciate your asking before merely going ahead with your plans. Best wishes to you in your efforts to provide a good site experience and resource for your membership.
