What's new in the softmodding world?
I had a Wii back in 2007 and I modded it with Twilight Hack to install HBC. I remember having custom VC games, all sorts of fun stuff. I later sold my Wii sometime in 2009.
Last year sometime, my cousin showed me the mods he had done to his Wii and how the actual bootloader had been modded and would play backups.
I just bought a new black Wii yesterday.
I've been trying to read around and learn everything I can about what's out now, how to accomplish certain tasks (loading backups, loading iso's from storage, etc...) and what the preferred method of hacking the Wii is these days before I go about modding my Wii.
First thing I did when I booted my new Wii was turn off WiiConnect24 to prevent it from updating. However, I can't get into the Wii Shop channel without updating now. Is there a way around this?
Now another thing I keep seeing is cIOS. I know it stands for a custom IOS, but can someone tell me what the IOS actually is? WiiBrew.org's definition is kind of vague.
What I've found so far is this guide which seems to be most applicable to my situation (4.2U) http://www.wiihacks.com/recommended-...y-4-2-wii.html
The HackMii installer seems to actually be simpler than using the original Twilight Hack, but I'm just curious as to how much of the original functionality of the console is retained now with softmodding (Wii Shop, etc...)
