Question regarding 4.2u and the appropriate softmod technique
Please forgive me if this is a bit lengthy...
I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I did a fair deal of searching and it only yielded conflicting and confusing results. If this is a repeat question I sincerely apologize. I want to start backing up to a HDD and loading games, but I've not yet done anything to my Wii. I installed the HBC over half a year ago to use emulators, but that's it.
I'm currently running 4.2u and the HBC. It was so long ago that I don't remember if I installed the HBC then updated to 4.2 or if I already had 4.2 then installed the HBC. I was reading the post in Lifehacker (I know, I know...) that mentioned any 4.X menu could use DOP-Mii v12 to reintroduce the Trucha Bug. That sounded fishy to me so I immediately came here and read both ShadowSonic2 and messie's guides to 4.2 softmodding. Those two aforementioned guides seemed far more complex then what I've read elsewhere. Do I need to go to the lengths described, or will the far more simple DOP-Mii v12 method of introducing the Trucha bug suffice? My Wii is several years old, probably from the first crop of them.
Also, in the subject of bricking, I want to install Bootmii as a boot2, not an IOS, so that I can perform a NAND backup. Every guide I've read has only said "install as boot2 if your Wii lets you" because that appears to be the only way to backup/restore. If I have to install as IOS, am I SOL as far as backing up my NAND goes?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
