How to Use Reggie! - A New Super Mario Bros. Wii Level Editor

Reggie! is the first complete level editor for NSMBW. I wanted to create a simple, easy-to-use guide to help our members learn how to create brand new, custom levels for their games.
Part I. Getting Dumped :019:
Reggie! - A New Super Mario Bros. Wii Level Editor!
In this first guide I'm going to show you how to replace World 1-1 in NSMBW with an excellent recreation of World 1-1 from the Original Super Mario Bros. from the Nintendo Entertainment System.
First we need to extract the game files. In NSMBW, each of the levels is contained within a .arc file on the game ISO. When loaded into Reggie! these files will display the entire level, ready to be cut and spliced and added on to give you almost any kind of level you can think of. Here are three methods you can use to get these game files onto your computer:
1. Dumping Stages - Original Disc Only

Download Reggie! Level Editor
This is by far the easiest method to dumping your .arc files, but will only work with the original game disc. Since none of you
are pirating the game, and own legal copies, everyone should be able to use this method, right? :)
1. Unrar the Reggie Software Download.
2. Rename the Reggiedumper.dol to Boot.dol
3. Create a Folder in the apps folder of your sdcard and put the Boot.dol in it.
4. Make sure original Game Disc is in the drive.
5. Put sd card back into wii load homebrew channel
6. Load the new folder with the boot.dol in it.
7. The dumper program should extract the levels. (use the download Minimum Option)
8. The dumped game levels will go into a new folder on your sdcard called Reggie.
9. Save the Reggie folder on your Sd card to your CPU.
10. Open Reggie on your CPU and click on the folder containing the dumped files.
11. Enjoy...Now you have Reggie running with the game levels from the disc.
While in Reggie click on File, Load Level, and find the folder where your dumped levels are.
The Levels extracted are only 8.3 MB, and the dumping process (using Minimum Dump) should take no more than a few minutes.
2. Dumping Individual Stages from an ISO
Download Wiiscrubber v1.4 (Don't forget to create the Keybin)
- Open your legally backed up iso of the game in Wiiscrubber.
- In the partition containing all of the game's files, scroll down to Stage
- Here you can select from any of the stages in the game. Right click, press Extract, and save to a location of your choosing.
- You can now import this .arc file into Reggie! for editing.
Here's an example of the filelist in Wiiscrubber:
After you're finished editing it, you can load the .arc back into your ISO by highlighting the same
file as before in Wiiscrubber, right clicking, and select Replace.
3. Dumping All Stages from an ISO
Performing the steps in 3a will extract everything from the game: stages, textures, music, etc. Everything you want for this guide
will be in the Stage folder. After you're finished editing your levels follow 3b to get your ISO ready to play.
3a. Dumping the .arc Files
Download Wiiscrubber v1.4 (Don't forget to create the Keybin, and do NOT use the PartionBuilder v1.0 included)
Download PartitionBuilder v1.2 (v1.1 is included, but use v1.2)
Load your ISO in Wiiscrubber
1. In Wiiscrubber, right click Partition:X (DATA) (X = Partition with the game data)
2. Select Unencrypted Partition -> Extract
3. Save to a folder like "nsmbdata" or w****ver you want.
At this point you have all the files dumped from the game. Navigate to the folder you just extracted them to
and you'll find all the .arc files in the Stage folder (You may want to make a backup of this folder).
Import into Reggie! and edit to your liking. For more on this see the section below, "Reggie!"
When finished editing, save your work and make sure you haven't moved any folders out of place. If you only
have 1 or 2 .arc files to replace, you can skip using Partition Builder and instead replace them individually using
3b. Using Partition Builder
It's time to rebuild the partition and import it back into the ISO. (Remember, do NOT use Partition Builder v1.0)
Extract key partition files:
1. In Wiiscrubber, expand Partition:X (DATA)
2. Right click + extract the following files:
3. Save them all to a folder like "nsmbsys" or something.
Rebuilding the partition:
1. Open partitionbuilder.exe (make sure NOT to use v1.0)
2. Load up the files it needs (extracted to "nsmbsys" in the previous step)
3. Source file directory at the bottom is looking for the data partition you extracted in the previous step ("nsmbdata" in my example)
4. Click build, remember the filename you saved it as
5. Wait. When it finishes, exit partitionbuilder.
*There have been a few people reporting blackscreens after re-building their ISO with Partition Builder v1.0-1.1. If this has happened
to you, try using Partition Builder v1.2 and make sure that you haven't moved ANY folders out of place in your extracted partition.
Back to Wiiscrubber:
1. Right click Partition:X (DATA) -> Unencrypted Partition -> Load -> Open the partition img you built in partitionbuilder.
2. Wait. Once it finishes you can exit Wiiscrubber and you'll be all set.
Part II. Reggie!
Okay now that we have our .arc files set up and ready to go, lets open Reggie!
If you haven't already, Click Here to Download Reggie! (Windows, Mac, Linux)
When you first open Reggie! you'll need to set the folder location of the .arc files you want to modify. All you need to do is find the Stage folder with the game files you extracted in the previous section, and set that as your Game Path in Reggie!
If it doesn't open automatically after setting the location, find and navigate to 01-01.arc from within the Reggie! interface. When you open the .arc file, you should see something like this:
This scene should look familiar, right? Of course! It's the first world in NSMBW, only now you can see all the behind-the-scenes information. You'll find the Level Overview and Palette on the sidebar. The Palette is where you can select from the many, many sprites and events to add to your custom levels in the future (select an object then right-click to place).
Lets have a closer look at the Toolbar in the top panel.
From left to right:
New Level | Open Level By Name | Save Level | Level Screenshot | Cut/Copy/Paste | Zoom | Zoom 100% | Zoom Out | Show Grid | Layers 0-2 | Area Settings | Zones | Backgrounds | Area Selection
Out with the New, In with the Old!
- For this section, Download SMB 1-1 remake(Fixed).arc
Alright, have we gotten pretty comfortable with the editor yet? Now that we have World 1-1 from NSMBW loaded up and ready to go, let's get rid of it!
When editing the levels from NSMBW, you're going to find that many of them don't just have one single Area. In fact, most of them are comprised of multiple Areas. The way Reggie! deals with this is by separating each Area by the little tab on the far right of the Toolbar:
Click that Areas Tab, and select Area 2. Back in the Main Window, scroll a little to the right and you should see something like this:
*Notice how in the Level Overview (top right) the details have changed to reflect the new Area.
So in this example, Area 2 is where the Underworld areas from World 1-1 are stored. IE - Anytime you get sucked down into a pipe from the Overworld, one of these spots in Area 2 is where you end up!
First, lets import the new custom level we just downloaded:
- Up at the top, click Settings > Import Area from Level... (Ctrl+Alt+O for Windows users)
- Find and select SMB 1-1 remake(Fixed).arc and click Open
- Select Area 1 and click OK
We just added in the Overworld from the original Super Mario Bros., but we aren't done yet. We still have another Area to add in, and we still have to get rid of World 1-1 from NSMBW.
- Now, click again on Settings > Import Area from Level...
- Open SMB 1-1 remake(Fixed).arc again and this time select Area 2
Here are couple pictures of these 2 steps so you can compare:
Now you should have 4 separate Areas in your level - NSMBW in Areas 1 & 2, and SMB in Areas 3 & 4.
Let's get rid of the NSMBW Areas now.
- Click the Areas Tab and select Area 1
- Click Settings > Delete Current Area... (Ctrl+Alt+D for Windows users)
- Click Yes to confirm, and the original Area 1 will be deleted
- Because we deleted Area 1, Reggie! has renumbered all the Areas to reflect this change
- Since the new Area 1 happens to be the old Area 2, click Settings > Delete Current Area...
- Yes to confirm
We now have completely gotten rid of NSMBW World 1-1, and are left with SMB 1-1 in it's place.
Save your work!
Replacing and Reparsing!
Now that we've got a fresh new custom level, we have to find a way to play it. There are a few ways you can go about this next step, but for this guide I'm going to show you how to replace it directly into the ISO using Wiiscrubber.
Open Wiiscrubber v1.4
1. Expand Partition:X (DATA) (X = Partition with the game data)
2. Scroll down and expand Stage
3. Right click on 01-01.arc -> Replace
4. Navigate to the 01-01.arc custom level you saved in the previous section
5. Wiiscrubber will rep**** and your ISO has been modified!
That's it! We're done, and you can now play the original Super Mario Brothers World 1-1 on your New Super Mario Brothers Wii game.
Renaming Your ISO
This is for USB Loaders.
I like to have both my original and my modified ISO on my drive at the same time, so that if I want to play my custom levels I can easily do so by switching back and forth at my leisure. It's really easy and fast, here's how to do it:
- Download WIIISORenamerv3.exe
- Use WiiISORenamer.exe to open your NSMBWii ISO
- Change your GAMEID and Game Title to any of your choosing -- For instance I changed my custom ISO to SMNE02 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii Custom
Those were just my examples, you can change them to w****ver you want, just make sure not to use the same GAMEID as the other games on your drive.
Now you can have all the custom levels you want, and still have access to the entire original game any time!
For those of you who have become a little more comfortable with Reggie! already, you might have realized early on that you could have easily just replaced Stage > 01-01.arc with SMB 1-1 remake(Fixed).arc in Wiiscrubber and skipped all the steps I outlined above. The longer method I used here was an attempt to help people get a little more familiar with the interface.
