System Update Confusion
Hi all. Please forgive my ignorance but I'm hoping someone can explain the system upgrade/updates to me. Here is my situation. I install Wasabi DX onto a console that is on 3.4u. I pop in Guitar Hero 5 with update and it updates and works. But my system still shows 3.4u? I try some other newer games with the update patched out such as Sports Resort and they don't play. I take a chance and burn Drawn to Life with the update still intact on the ISO and let it update. Now the newer games including Sports Resort all work but my system still shows 3.4U.
What am I missing here? Any info would be appreciated.
You were missing IOS. Each game uses a specific IOS version and revision to run.
Any disc update carries a bunch of IOS revisions which are checked against your Wii. If any revisions on the disc are higher than your Wii it will trigger an update by disc, this does not necessarily mean you get a new system menu update.
If a game comes along and the update is removed/blocked and the IOS is needs is not on your Wii then it black screens.
Updating using Drawn obviously installed a few IOS revisions that satisfy the other games needs.
So all games carry IOS updates to insure that game runs but only the official Nintendo release games carry system menu updates. I was always under the impression certain games needed a certain version number (menu ver#) to run.
Goood to know. Thanks!
All games carry IOS and System updates, whether they are retail or backup (scrubbed WBFS'd games excepted)
No game ever created 'needs' a certain system level, just load in the IOS and it would work, provided you block the update triggering.
My wii had 3.4E software + Wasabi DX (at least 1.2, don't know for sure, can it be seen somewhere?). Wii Update Blocker was enabled.
When I loaded retail NSMB disk it asked about the update. I started the updates and now the wii has 4.1E software.
What does the update blocker actually block?
At least the PAL backups are still working and I tested also one scrubbed game without problems. I assumed that 4.1 would block scrubbed games. Not?
I am a bit confused and wondering what happens if I (or the kids) run some game with 4.2U update. Will I have nice new white brick?
Good modchips can be programmed to block whichever updates you choose, you can have it block all updates, foreign or none. Usually done through the config utility.
I donot know what wrong with wasabi dx blocker. at least it doesn't work with a latest firmware 3.0 on my Wii. I have one more question about the IOS and System updates carried by game. I want know if my following understanding is correct:
If I have required IOS in my wii (version is higher or same as required), I can play the game and game disc will NOT ask me for a system (menu) update.
am i right? thanks.
Can you have both the older and newer ioses?Or do they overwrite each other?
Would that explain why older games work and newer games wont?
Hard to set each game to match each ios.
You can only have one ios36 or ios38. When you install one, it replaces/overwrites the other.
Would this be the reason why some games dont work?Newer instead of older ios?
What if a old ios is installed and a game takes the newer ios?-ie-ios36-257 ios36-6637.
