Yeah, it will help. But I had the same problem, and I solved it in a radically different way. Let me start from the beginning.
I bought a Wii on Friday. Virgin 3.4E machine, all the nice accessories and whatnot. I already had my Wasabi DX V5 at the ready. I installed the thing without a hitch, following the various guides available on the Internet. When I go and try it out before reassembling the console, however, the same thing that OP experienced happens. I put in an original Wii Sports, to "prime" the modchip with my region (although I had already set the dip switches), I try to run it and it returns me to the main menu. I retry, and it gives me the black screen asking me to eject the disc, turn off the console and refer to the manual.
I obviously panicked, disassembled and reassembled the damn thing, checked all the cables, checked all the guides I could think of. I was thinking I'd update AFTER checking if the chip actually was properly installed and working, and this behavior was definitely not expected.
Try as I may, the chip wouldn't work. Uninstalling it proved the Wii to be working indeed, as it booted the same Wii Sports without a hitch. Then I stumbled upon this thread while googling for an answer, and found the posts by bastard, advising to update and reporting this problem as "known".
One Verbatim DVD-R and 5 minutes of installation later, my problem was fixed and the chip works like a charm. I didn't test any backup games yet, but I will in a while and let you know the results (I'm confident they WILL work, however). All original games I had, though, started without a hitch. So, long story short... Get a spindle of DVD-R, Verbatim. Burn them at the SLOWEST possible setting, pop the disc in the drive and update the chip. Problem solved. Thank you, Bastard.
Hi, it is fine that you solved it, but I could not update my chip, I tried many DVDs (-R) used Imgburn speed 1,2,4 , but nothing worked. So I sent my chip back and was told that is was really deffective. So the new one with the firmware 2.0 is on the way to me. Hopefully it will work properly ;)

Wasabi DX Error
This community has helped me a lot in the process of modding my Wii. So thanks to all of u guys.
I recently got the notorious black screen after installing my Wasabi DX chip and this is how it went...
Installed the Wasabi Dx mod chip as instructed. Plugged in the wires and booted the Wii. To make sure I did not break anything, I played the the Wii Sports disc and it played perfect. After breathing a sigh of relief, rebooted my Wii and inserted my Disc which has a burned copy of another game. Now things started to go down the hill...
1. Clicked on the game and the after seeing the Wii disc spin for a while, I got the black screen with a message like "An error has occured..blah...blah Reboot the wii'.
2. After searching around in the web, decided to upgrade my Wasabi DX to 2.0 BETA. The upgrade ran fine and got the message "SUCCESS". Rebooted my Wii.
3. Now I tried to access the configuration for the wasabi dx by pressing the "EJECT" button 3 times and what do ya know??? Black Screen again.
4. Rebooted the wii.
5. Tried to access the wasabi configuration again and there is was. The config menu. After breathing a sigh of relief, Enabled/Disabled some of the options.
6. Rebooted the wii.
7. Threw in the burned copy of a game into the Wii and after spinning for a while, it recognized the game and started playing it.
BTW - I burn my games using KODAK DVD-R @ 5x and no problems so far.
I hope this helps someone.
Enjoy your Wii.
I have also recently installed this chip and have found that I get the black screen with copied and original games, I havent had chance to try any of the solutions posted yet but when I did remove the chip at the weekend to see if the original games would work I basically got a disc ready error and directed to review manual? What the possibility ive knackered by drive? Anyone else has this problem?
