Just wanted to add my experience. I had my wii since a few months after release, and had my wii in standby, non stop, for what, years now? The artifact issue just hit me a few weeks ago. The wii menus had dots on it. I called Nintendo and they said it was out of warranty but they'd cover the cost of repair. Turns out it wasn't repair - it was replacement. With a refurb no less because I got an older model wii. Thankfully, the DVD drive was also older. I guess I'm thankful that they replaced it, but it's a refurb with a 1 year warranty. Beats buying a new system I guess, and I know Dell does the same thing as far as refurbs are concerned. Anyhow - just an FYI. If you get a wii serviced for this by N, you'll get a refurb with a new serial number in return.
Munky Puke, can you give any more details about how you got Nintendo to cover the cost of repairs? I am in a similar boat to you - got the Wii shortly after launch. It hasn't even been hooked up in a year, and when I tried to play today, I got green/black pixels all over the screen.
I'm going to give Nintendo a call tomorrow but really don't want to pay money to repair a system I barely use anyway. Any advice you can give?
Just call Nintendo and explain the situation and be totally honest. I didn't even have to ask to have the charge waived - they volunteered it. I think since it's such a wide spread issue, if not a design flaw, that they're covering it for all incidents. You'll get a refurb Wii with a 1 year waranty on it. I wish it wasn't refurb, but I'm not going to be picky. I CAN tell you I'll never run a with WiiConnect in standby mode ever again. Good luck to you!
Very Interesting, glad I found this article. I searched for hot wii and got to this article.
I recently installed a WasabiDX and bought my Wii about 1 month ago.
I noticed today my Wii was HOT when I got home, and it had been off for a while. I also was confused as to why when I turned it off the power light was the same color as when it was on.
I turned off WiiConnect24, and set Standby to OFF and now when I shut the Wii down I get the red power light.
I turned WiiConnect24 back on, which I assume is OK to do now that the standby is off?
The Wii gets really HOt! I notice a pink haze sometime! Video Haze! I use a USB ADPT. fan to help with wii cooling!! I recommend a fan with the Wii! I also recommend pulling the power cord out after your done using the system!
when you received your refurb, did they send it with all the latest updates? Mine has artifacts and I want to get it fixed, but I am bummed that it might have 4.2 installed and I really don't want that. Also, did you have any mods on the one you sent in? Or did you "virginize" it?
Huh. I thought it was just me, for some reason. I bought my Wii on launch date, so it's pretty old (I didn't mod it until recently though XD). But I always kept Connect24 on, and the thing was always hot, even though I'd go months upon months without playing the thing.
After I began modifying it, I disabled Connect24 and whoa. A WORLD of difference! It's no longer scolding <3 And because I play backups through the USB, the Wii has no reason to heat up and overwork itself as much now. My HDD gets hotter than the Wii does. I love it!
But I never had spot issues... That's interesting.
I never use WiiConnect 24 anymore anyway since the rumor of Nintendo being able to access your Wii through it. If you have a modded Wii...turn WiiConnect 24 off...just to be on the safe side.
