USB Loader GX Doesn't See Drive
I've got a problem that is driving me mad and I'm turning to the combined knowledge of Wiihacks for help. Let me start out by stating this is my 11th softmod since 2008 and I've never encountered this problem before.
A couple of days ago I ran through the softmod tutorial and successfully installed HBC and USB Loader GX to a friends son's Wii (4.3E). No problems were encountered until I plugged the USB harddrive (Toshiba Canvio portable 1 TB) and formatted it with a 1TB FAT32 partition using Partition Magic. When I plugged it into WBFS Manager it threw an error about the drive not being available or the letter being used. I went to Windows 7 Disk Management and assigned it another drive letter, removed the partition and then reformatted it to FAT32. WBFS Manager saw it that time and I managed to back up an ISO of a game that I'd already backed up from my own Wii-enabled HDD to the Toshiba HDD. I then popped it into the Wii, loaded up USB Loader GX and though it recognised the drive it didn't see the game I'd cloned. I then decided to back-up some official Wii disks to the HDD and that worked fine. However the next time I plugged it in and tried to access it through WBFS Loader I got the same error about the drive not being available or the letter being used.
At this point I decided to try my luck with another drive (Western Digital My Passport 500Gb. I didn't have much luck. After formatting it using Partition Magic I got the same error as the last one. I used Windows 7 Disk Management and assigned it another drive letter, removed the partition and formatted it to FAT32. This time I used Wii BackUp Manager and it saw it straight away, so I plugged in my other Wii-enabled HDD and backed up the entire games library to the WD drive. "Happy days" I thought as I plugged it in to the Wii and powered it up, "my son is going to be so pleased with this new drive". Alas and alack I got a black screen instead of the USB Loader GX, so I pulled the USB lead out, waited for the "trying to load your slow USB drive" message and plugged it it. Low and behold it spotted the drive, loaded the GUI and showed me all the games I'd backed up. Sadly none of them would load.
Not to be put off I did some more Googling and found another guide and followed it by plugging the drive back into my laptop, opening the drive in Disk Management, assigning a letter/not formatting it and then formatting it in WBFS Manager. This all worked fine - even WBFS Manager saw it, so I back-up the same Wii-enabled drive, plugged it into the Wii, powered it up and loaded USB Loader GX. Same result - a black screen. So I unlugged the drive, plugged it in again and got to the USB Loader GX GUI. I decided to go for broke and loaded up a game - and it worked! So "homed" back to the Wii interface, loaded up USB Loader and got the black screen again, did the unplug/plug to trick the app and loaded the game like I did before.
So, can anyone suggest where things are going wrong? Both drives are recognised by the Wii and USB Loader GX - to some extent. It seems like I'm having the same issue with both drives. I don't think it's a hardware compatibility issue - well, not 100% anyway - and I've got the latest version of USB Loader GX. Is it something I'm doing during the formatting process?
Can anyone help? I've been on this for two days and have pretty much exhausted my patience. It's gone midnight, my eyes are shot, my back is screaming at me to get off the lap top but my brain won't stop trying to solve this puzzle. Frankly I'm amazed I've managed to stay coherent enough to type this post.
