I think that the 3DS and Wii U are the only consoles ever sold at a loss. Wii's were profitable from the start (very small, I heard once it was about $6 per unit -- but nearly 100,000,000 units is still not chump change, not counting price cutting measure to increase profit per unit later in production).
3DS at $250 was not at a loss until the price drop in August '11.
Are you talking Nintendo only? Most consoles from what I have read are sold at a loss. They profit from selling the software.

This talk of loss on the Wii U is simply PR spin to make people think a price cut is not coming. Don't pay attention to any of it. Strong rumors a price cut is imminent causes a huge blow to sales, everyone denies a price cut is coming as long as they possibly can. I think you can pretty much guarantee the Wii U is getting a price cut this year along with new bundles most likely.
Yes. I was referring to Nintendo systems only. I think every other system released this century outside of Nintendo has been at a loss, at least initially.
