Upgrade from SD to SDHC
So I've softmodded a wii before this will be my second time. I'm out of town and haven't gone through the process yet. My question is in regards to upgrading my SD card after the softmod have been completed. I have been unable to find any information on this subject thus far. I will be using smash stack on a regular ol' SD card (2 gb) and then up to a Class 10 SDHC card (16 gb). I am completely in the dark about this. Would i just put the channels I want on the new SD card? Is a class 10 even compatible? Any information on the subject is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.
From system Menu 4.0 and up, SDHC cards are supported. As for most homebrew apps, SDHC support is added. I myself use a 4 GB SDHC and everything works fine.
Only problem I've had, was the ability to copy wii saves to my SDHC. But using Wii Game Manager GX solves that problem, it's a homebrew app with SDHC support. Does just what you need. Copy, restore wii saves to your system.
You'll be fine with an SDHC. If you can, keep both. I have a spare 2 GB SD with my Brawl hack files on it. More memory is better.
Overall, there's very few things that don't work with SDHC, but they're very minor and have alternatives. Mostly everything, works with SDHC. Especially important things.
Hope that helps!
My main concern is playing and loading wii and GC back ups also running emulators.
also thanks so much you da bess
Sure, emulators, usb loaders, it all works with SDHC. You can get a 32 GB (I'm not sure what the max size is, but I think I read somewhere that you can even use a 124 GB). I personally use a 200 GB external hard drive for both Wii and Gamecube backups.
As I said before, the higher, the better. The developers wouldn't forget to make their loaders with SDHC support, it'll be really useless to use a 2 GB for loading Wii games. Besides, you can't fit a wii game in a 2 GB, or even a 4 GB (Depends on the game)
Gamecube games: 1.3 GB
Wii games: 4.3 GB
But when shrunken/scrubbed/have all empty garbage data removed from the iso, a lot of space is shaved off. Animal Crossing is a 200-300 MB game when scrubbed. Or in WBFS format. Some games only save about 500 MB, leaving you with a 3.8 GB wii game.
Hope that helps!
The only thing that you need the non-SDHC cards for is the modding process.
Once that's done, you can copy everything over to a high-speed SDHC card and everything works just great.
I've been using a class 10-32 gig card for about a year, now. Bought it when DML started things off.
Alright so let me get this straight as it has been well over a year (maybe two) since the last time i've done this. I am using Smash Stack to softmod. That is the only thing I have on my 2gb sd. Do I need to put anything else on that card? Or just run smash stack and then do the rest with my SDHC? I feel like such a nub.
You need the standard SD card for Chapters 1 and 2 of the Softmod ANY Wii Guide. You can use your SDHC starting with Chapter 3.
where can I find this guide?
