First Things First!

First off, you must be fully and successfully soft-modded by following this guide:

The good and bad of NTFS

The Good

• No space wasted when compared to a WBFS file system as the partition can be shared for other duties
• Can be used for storing your USB Loaders files, movies(WiiMC), etc.
• Recovery tools/defragmentation choices are much better for NTFS
• Can load files >4GB, i.e. ISO files
• No need to convert ISO(s) into .wbfs, although you will save space if you do

The Bad

• Homebrew channel does not support apps on NTFS
  
• NAND Emulation is not supported

Setting Up Your External Hard Drive

New Hard Drives -- Ready to use out of the box (all new hard drives come formatted already in NTFS, all you need to do is set the partition active through the appropriate program)

Setting the Partition Active

Choose your specific OS

• Click Start-Run and type the following in the run box, compmgmt.msc, click OK

Windows XP

• Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes for problems. The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. To use Chkdsk, you must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group. You can also run Chkdsk from My Computer or from Windows Explorer.

How to run Chkdsk at the command prompt

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
3. Use one of the following procedures:
   
   • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
   • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.
     
     Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
     Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
   • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.
     
     Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
     Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
   • Please use the /r flag on the used hard drive

• Right-click on the drive in question

Linux

There is no chkdsk equivalent for Linux as NTFS is a non-native, proprietary file system. To check/verify a hard drive, get Hiren's BootCD, download it, burn to CD and boot it. Make sure the drive is connected to the computer. On boot up, choose the Mini Windows XP, it will load up, and after a few minutes, Windows XP will be available. Double-click My Computer, locate the hard drive and note it's drive letter. Close My Computer, then double-click Command prompt. At the DOS prompt, type <Drive Letter>: ENTER Example: C: The prompt should read the root of the drive you want to check, i.e. C:\> Then type chkdsk /r ENTER to run the chkdsk utility. Let it run its course, it is best to do this at night because it can take a long time to complete, depending on drive capacity. When complete, close the DOS window and restart the computer. All done.

• You have several option to choose from when formatting a hard drive, from using built-in options of Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux and Mac and/or specific freeware downloads for your particular OS of choice

Windows XP Disk Management

**Please backup any files that you may need or want to keep**

• Download Easeus Partition Master Home Edition - mirror - epm.exe

• Install It

Connect your External USB Hard Drive to your PC

1. Open EASEUS Partition Master -- Start Menu > All Programs > EASEUS Partition Master 6.5.2 Home Edition > EASEUS Partition Master 6.5.2 Home Edition
*or C:\Program Files (x86)\EASEUS\EASEUS Partition Master 6.5.2 Home Edition\bin\epm0.exe

2. Under "Disk 3" you will see my USB Hard Drive Disk - (Notice - your Disk number may/will be different - Also notice that mine is already formatted)

3. Right Click on the USB HDD you want to use and select "Delete" -- "Delete the Selected Partition?" Click "OK".

• Do the same for ALL partitions on this Hard Drive ONLY
• The Drive will now show as "Unallocated"

4. Right click your now "unallocated" USB HDD and select "Create" -- Change the following Options :

***Notice: Using the recommended values will aid in diagnosing any problems you may have, until you are familiar with your Wii and it's operation, please try to use these.

• Partition Label : Wii HDD --(Recommended Label -- Name it whatever you want)

• Create As : Primary

• Drive Letter : K: (Recommended Drive Letter -- Choose whatever letter you want)

• File System : NTFS

• Cluster Size : Default -- (This will be set Automatically)

5. Size And Position

Set The Following:

• Unallocated Space Before should say "0.0 MB"
• Partition Size : (Whatever size you want, in the example I used all available space)
• Unallocated Space After should say "0.0 MB"
• Click "OK"

6. Set As Active

• Right Click your USB HDD -- Click "Advanced" then "Set Active" -- Click "OK"

7. Look to the bottom left hand side of the program. Listed under Disk Operations should be the steps to make your USB HDD ready to go for setup. In my case, 1) Set the Label for J: Wii HDD; 2)Delete J: on Disk 3; 3)Create K: on Disk 3; 4)Set Active Wii HDD K: on Disk 3.

• Now Click "APPLY"

• A new window will pop up informing you to "Apply Changes" and list the amount of operations are currently pending. If you want to click the box to "Shut down the computer after changes are applied" is up to you, otherwise, click YES.

• Another window pops up and it is doing the operations you have made for it, see example. This process is particularly fast to do, so it shouldn't be a waiting game unless your computer is really slow.

• Click OK. You are back to the program's main interface, exit the program, you are done!

Congratulations, your HDD is now formatted to NTFS, move onto installing a loader

Installing Loaders and Forwarder Channels

Note: To use these forwarder channels you will need IOS58, if not, the forwarder will kick you right back to the system menu or just hang. Please read the guide for IOS58 Installer and install the required file from the guide and come back! - alternate IOS58 Installer

• Only Configurable USB Loader, WiiFlow and USB Loader GX work with NTFS hard drives.

• You can launch Configurable USB Loader and WiiFlow from USB with a forwarder, no SD required. USB Loader GX has a bug in it that requires you to set all your user defined paths to SD card or you can possibly corrupt your data, so you need a SD card for GX until they get the bug fixed.
  

• This will install a forwarder channel to your Wii system menu that looks for the boot.dol on the SD/USB. To replace it with a newer version, just overwrite the existing boot.dol, that's it!

• Priiloader compatible forwarders are included if available.

Installation

If using the wad pack, make sure to install all of the wads. You can also install your forwarder channel at the same time.
NOTE:With the lastest d2x cIOS intaller you can install IOS 236 too.
If you are using the installer, make sure to install all bases, starting with ios 245 and the lowest available base, working your way up to 251 base 58, using IOS236 to do the install.
In the first option you come in the intaller(cIOS Selection), it will choose automatically IOS 58 (AHBPROT) for you. If you don't have it , select IOS 236 and then on the following page where you actually install d2x, you select it like this:

Be sure to delete gameconfig1.ini and gameconfig2.ini in /wiiflow/settings, all WDM files /wiiflow/codes/wdm, and also your /wiiflow/cache/lists folder!
Note: These dol's are less tested than previous betas, but may very well be more stable than the most recent releases. The entire sound handling has been changed/rewritten and things seem to freeze up a lot less.

Forwarder Installation

Wad Manager

Get Wad Manager and extract it to the root of your SD.

1. Make a folder on the root of your SD and name it "wad"
2. Copy the wad file(s) you want to the "wad" folder on the SD
3. Start Home Brew Channel and load Wad Manager
4. Click A to continue if you agree to the terms
5. Select <IOS249>
6. Press A
7. Nand Emulation <Disabled>
8. Press A
9. Source <Wii SD Slot>
10. Press A
11. Navigate to the "wad" folder with wiimote D-Pad and select the wad file you wish to install, make sure arrow is on the wad you want to install
12. Press A
13. Select Action <Install Wad>
14. Press A
15. Installation starts - wait for a few - then it should state it has been installed
16. A prompt shows to press any key to continue, Press A
17. At this point, you can either pick another wad to install and start at Step 5 again, or press B, then press the Home button to restart
18. Finished

Multi-Mod Manager

Get Multi-Mod Manager and extract it to the root of your SD.

1. Start HBC
2. Click Multi-Mod Manager (MMM) - Press Load
3. Use D-Pad to go to WAD Manager
4. Press A
5. If you have a folder on the root of your SD named "wad" it should go there automatically
6. Navigate to the wad that you want to install, hitting + enables batch installation of wads, so selecting a wad, hit + then go to another, hit +, etc...
7. Press A
8. Select File operation <Install>
9. Press A
10. Press A again to continue
11. Wad installation begins
12. Should get a prompt status saying completed successfully
13. Press A
14. Press B
15. Press B
16. Press B
17. Press home to Exit
18. Finished

Getting Your Games to the Hard Drive

Using The Wii and a USB Loader to Copy Your Games

Configurable USB Loader a.k.a. CFG Loader

1. Put game disc in Wii
2. Launch CFG Loader
3. Press + to install game
4. Press A to Continue - Game Installs
5. Press A to eject game disc
6. If you have additional discs, put another game disc in, start at step 3
7. Done

To download covers

1. Press 1 in main CFG Loader menu
2. Click Updates
3. Click Download Missing Covers and/or All Covers
4. Done

WiiFlow

1. Put game disc in Wii
2. Launch WiiFlow
3. If there are no games on the HDD, WiiFlow will state 'No Games Found', click Install
4. If no prompt to Install Game, move pointer to lower left of screen and click the 2nd icon, the cogs
5. Click right arrow, go to page 2, click Install Game
6. You will get a prompt, click Go
7. When finished installing, click Back
8. For additional game discs, just click Install Game again
9. Done

To download covers

1. from step 7 above, click left arrow, go to page 1
2. Click download All Covers and/or Missing Covers
3. Covers will begin downloading
4. When downloading complets, click Back
5. Click Back again
6. Done

USB Loader GX

1. Put game disc in Wii
2. Launch USB Loader GX
3. Click the + on lower left screen to install game
4. GX will prompt you to install, click Yes
5. Prompt again to continue install, click Yes
6. Game Installation begins
7. A prompt will state installation was successful, click OK
8. Repeat at step 3 for additional game discs

To download covers

1. In main GX window, click 1
2. Cover Download - tick the cover styles you want, then click OK
3. You will get a prompt stating found missing images, just click Yes
4. Covers begin downloading
5. Promt stating that images have downloaded successfully, click OK
6. Done

Using Your Computer to Transfer Your Games to the Hard Drive

Playing the ISO directly

To play the ISO without converting it to a .wbfs, just do the following:
1. Create a wbfs folder on root of USB, i.e. USB:\wbfs
2. Follow one of these naming conventions below for your ISO:
USB:\wbfs\GAMEID.iso
USB:\wbfs\Title_[GAMEID].iso
USB:\wbfs\Title_[GAMEID]\GAMEID.iso - Recommended
USB:\wbfs\GAMEDID_Title\GAMEID.iso

Wii Backup Manager

Download Wii Backup Manager and install it.

1. Have your external HDD connected to computer.
2. Launch Wii Backup Manager, go to Options-Settings-FAT32/NTFS and set WBFS split style to Unlimited, Click OK. Setting it to Unlimited will not split the game, i.e.like for FAT32 drives, see #10 below. Also note that is you want to copy the ISO to play from the HDD, check Use ISO on NTFS drives under misc.

3. Click the Files Tab - Add - Folder, navigate to where you have your game backups located (ISO or WBFS)

4. Click the Drive 1 tab, and select the appropriate Drive Letter of your external HDD

5. Next you will get a prompt stating that there is no WBFS folder, click Yes to create it.

6. Go back to the Files tab, and click/check which games you want to transfer to your external HDD, then click Transfers - Drive 1

7. At this time, your games are being copied to the external HDD, let it do its thing

8. When copying is complete, you will come back to the main program window, click the Drive 1 tab, and you should see your newly copied games on the external HDD

9. At this point, your are done, exit out of Wii Backup Manager and safely remove your USB
hard drive from computer and go hook it up to the Wii.

10. Note: Setting the split style to Unlimited, you will have 1 WBFS file for use on NTFS, I used
SSBB for this example as it is a game >4GB, see pic below

Convert WBFS/ISO/CISO to WBFS/ISO/CISO

1. Start Wii Backup Manager
2. Under the Files tab, click Add-Files or Folders, navigate to where your WBFS/ISO/CISO game file is located
3. Go to the Transfer tab, click WBFS/ISO/CISO, and navigate to where you want your output file saved to, click OK
4. Let it do its thing
5. All done, that's all there is to it for making WBFS/ISO/CISO files from WBFS/ISO/CISO files
6. Remember, you can convert from any 3 of these file formats to the other, ISO to WBFS, ISO to CISO, WBFS to ISO, WBFS to CISO, CISO to ISO and CISO to WBFS

Clone one drive to another

1. Start Wii Backup Manager
2. Click Drive 1 tab, for ease of use, make this drive the one you want to clone FROM
3. Click Drive 2 tab, for ease of use, make this drive you want to clone TO
4. Click the Drive 1 tab, click Select-Items not on Drive 2, this selects all the games on Drive 1 not on Drive 2
5. Then click Transfer-Drive 2
6. That's it for cloning one drive to another
7. Or you can use Windows Explorer to Copy/Paste from one drive to the other

Wii Game Manager

***NOTE: I am using WBFS on the external HDD in the sake of saving space***
Download Wii Game Manager and install it.
1. Make sure you create a folder named 'wbfs' in the root of the USB HDD, USB:/wbfs
2. Launch Wii Game Manager
3. Click Options-Copy Options-Game Partition Only
4. Click Game List A
5. Click Open-Open .iso Files (List A) or .wbfs Files (List A)

Linux

There is no known native game managers for NTFS drives under Linux, only wbfs formatted hard drives are supported at this time. So your only option is to install Wine and run either Wii Backup Manager or Wii Game Manager. Look under the Windows spoiler on how to use Wii Backup Manager and Wii Game Manager. Wii Backup Manager 0.3.8 build 61 confirmed working under Wine, only the cover art did not show/download, minor issue, but the loaders can get your covers anyways.

Miscellaneous - Dealing With Archived Files

To extract the archives found in this guide and other guides on WiiHacks, use WinRAR, WinZip or 7-Zip.
On numerous occasions, you will see the guide stating to extract the contents of the archive to the root of the SD or USB. The root is the base directory of the storage device, i.e. C:\

The example given here will be using WinRAR because that is what I prefer to use, I assume WinZip and 7-Zip are comparable:
To extract archive to root of USB drive or SD card:

1. Make sure you have your SD card in or USB drive connected to your computer
2. Double click or right-click the RAR file
3. If right-clicking, click "Extract files..."
4. Extraction path and options window opens
5. Navigate and select your USB drive or SD card
6. Under Update mode, tick Extract and replace files
7. Click OK
8. If you get a pop-up stating Confirm file replace, click Yes to All
9. That's it!

FAQ

Q. Can I load .iso or do I have to convert the ISO to .wbfs?

A.Yes, you can load .iso's but there is no substantial point in doing so. By converting the ISO to WBFS you will save a tremendous amount of space on your hard drive, depending upon the game of course. The Wii Backup Manager and Wii Game Manager will convert from .iso to .wbfs automatically.

Q. I see some of my games as .wbfs.tmp. What's going on?

A. You do not have enough space on your drive to save the game properly.

Q. When I load a game I get this weird error : cIOS249rev18-cIOS222v4-IOS223v4-IOS224v5 or higher required to load games from NTFS. Upgrade IOS249.

A. You need to use Hermes cIOS 222/223 v4+ or cIOSx Rev 19+ to boot a NTFS drive.

Q. Doesn't WBFS scrub the game to a smaller size? What's the point in NTFS?

A. No, the file size of a .wbfs file will be approximately the same or slightly smaller than the same file on a WBFS drive. It uses the same compression method regardless of WBFS or NTFS. Using NTFS also lets you use the external for other duties, i.e. for backup storage for desktop, laptop, etc.

Q. Can I install a game disc to a NTFS drive in .wbfs format?

A. Yes, CFG, WiiFlow and USB Loader GX does this.

everything works with fat32 nand emulation,apps works with gx,wiiflow,cfg loader,uloader

it was just recently made that you can launch the loaders of ntfs and save their config/folders only wiiflow and cfg have read/write support for ntfs

Ah ok. I'm still new to the Wii mod scene so I'm not too familiar with Nand emulation or what it is so I suppose that isn't a concern for me personally. I bought a 320GB Seagate Go HDD so it came as NTFS... so I can skip the formatting step?
