    FAQ

    FAQ / Hot Topics

For all modding beginners I tried to wrap up some informations about softmodding and give you a usefull starter overview and maybe a little insight into Wii hacking.

The Forum Rules are an essential part for the integrity of the whole community. Read them and understand them: Questions/asking support for cheats or illegaly acquired game backups can't be answered. The thread will be moderated/closed due to rules violation. Keep that in mind when you post in the forum and the chat of the site or deal with the consequences.

If you can't find something, try to use the search function.

Sometimes the search results are ordered in an odd way..just browse the results pages.

Join the chat to get hints how to mod your Wii or talk about whatever you want.
    Chat via IRC

    Sidenote:

Keep in mind you can also search within the thread your are currently reading, top right corner, "search thread".
Maybe you want to try out this too:

Just place your query before or behind that site:wiihacks.com.

When you are browsing the forum sections don't forget to look at the sticky threads, as these will be your main source for informations, guides and tutorials.

    (ERT/EMT)
I am a lazy bugger and maybe you too.., so I will introduce a new measures to have a guess what you get into.
The estimated reading time (ERT) and the estimated modding time (EMT) (e.g. backing up the NAND not included, takes 30-45 mins).
I know pretty useless, but if you find something like (30min/15min) you will need about half an hour
to read and comprehend the text and approx. 15 minutes to get the job done (very experience dependent).
Where the EMT is not applicable there is an (5min/-), read it in 5 mins, memorize it and go on.
You guess these values depend on your previous knowledge and experience, how fast you can
get your sd card prepared and how much fear you have pressing the A button, so put them as the roughest values you know about

    Sidenote:

Keep the fear of bricking as low as possible, or you will just run into it overlooking something and then you are bricked.
Just stay calm, even when you see nothing else then a black screen and referr to the Bricked Issues section of the forum.
The chance to brick your wii is not zero that is for sure.
But there are several things you must not do to prevent it and a handful measures to recover from a brick. Stick to the guides (read them 10 or more times if needed) and do them step by step.
If you run into trouble don't hesitate to ask your questions in the guide's thread.
Again, do not rush through anything, take your time.

Let's get started. You want to do something to your wii, good, maybe you want to get to know your wii in the first place.

Wii internals, Wii Abc, Basics, Who is that cIOS guy?

Just keep the basics in mind as everyone will talk and ask you about your system menu version (look in the top-right corner of your system menu settings, you really need to know that one), the cIOS you installed, is BootMii installed as boot2 or IOS, are you disc or usb loading, what loader are you using?!?

Clearly you want to know what is inside your Wii. Track down the Wii's serial No. (sticker on the console's back) and just find it out!

If you got a DVD drive with one of the newer D3-v2 or D4 chips you won't be able to play any burned dvd (game or movie), only retail Wii and GC games will run on your console (all black/red and recently bought Wiis will have one of those chips).
You got one? Go for a softmodding USB loading route.

Sidenote: Of course there are solderless modchips etc. but softmodding opens the door for such much more: Coverflow gameloaders, mediaplayers (.avi, .mp3, etc.), internet radio streams, youtube (... endless list) and gives you the full control of your Wii system. My opinion: If you want to invest, get a nice USB harddrive, which is already on this

Ok! You are good to go now

You really want to get it running?
Make sure what system menu version you are on (top-right of system menu settings) and grab the appropriate guide. It really depends on you which one you want use.
Go for the one you understand the most and keep in mind if you want to do online or offline softmodding,
make sure you download everything needed and provided in the guide.
Major requirement for all of these guides is a SD card, get a real SD card (no SDHC or micro-sd card with adapter), a 2GB SD card (brand: SanDisk for example) will do just fine (look in old digital cameras or navigation system (backup your data before usage..) or just buy one). To check your card for compatibility have a look here or here, but remember only SD cards will work for your first modding steps.
    Sidenote:
To prevent bricking make sure you follow the instructions step by step (read everything + the WARNINGS!).
Install BootMii and PriiLoader (sometimes marked optional, but highly recommended).
Also: Playing ANY game is not system menu version dependent!! You don't need to be on a specific version to do anything! A good version to be on is 4.1. The versions 4.2 and 4.3 were only designed to make our modding life a bit harder and have no benefit for the user.

    Softmod Guide Overview

Now you are softmodded and want to get your gamecollection running? Preparing a haeddrive is quite time consuming. You start with formatting, then will use a game-managing software to convert and copy .iso files to your drive. Copying loads of data is the time-killer here of course (depinding on your collection size this can take several hours/half a day, but it is obviously worth the trouble ). Have a look below at one of the USB loading guides:

Don't forget to have a look at all the other amazing guides.

Your Wii is softmodded and actually should be up to date with no need to improve something
See for yourself if everything went correct during your modding procedure.

    Syscheck, cIOS/IOS Versions

IOS and cIOS you want to update something?

    - Be sure to read that and keep in mind what you should never ever do -

Brick Prevention - Things you should never do

When you get an Error Code on game startup or during installation of an App, try to find a solution in the site's Error index.

You got a blackscreen when launching a game? As mentioned game loading is cIOS dependend if you use a loading software, but it is also possible that the game needs further treatment, please refer to the site's Problematic Games & Solution Index.

If the shop channel ask you for an update: DO NOT UPDATE!
Have a look here: Wii Shop without updates

You get green screens on game startup, this happens due to incompatible regions of your Wii and the game you are trying to load. This can be fixed within the loader you are using. Find the option: Videomode and set it to console default or force it to your Wii's region (PAL/NTSC). Sometimes altering the game language to english helps too (also in the loaders settings).
You can also find a small description on that issue here: Play out of region games (disc loading)

Krank has made up two very good threads for troubleshooting.

    &

mauifrog is working on everything, maybe you need one of these.

If you got a major problem, black screening on wii startup, stop by in the BRICKED Wii Issues ONLY section of the forum.

Maybe I will list some more useful apps here too, but the list is growing every day so it is easier for you and for me to have a look at sites hosting the actual Apps & Tools.

    Game Loaders:

    Mediaplayers:

If you want to create your own channels have a look here: Custom Channels and Forwarders

And finally for all who want to play GC Backups (note that there is NO usb loading for GC games yet when softmodded. Having a WODE would allow you that.).

I've got to update a softmodded wii, but i don't softmod it originally, tho i know that unlike my wii, some games such as new super mario bros don't work on it.

Should i reset everything and start a fresh soft mod or should i just update the softmod using the guide on here, will new super mario bros work if i just do the update?

    thanks all!

yes, updating should help in terms of installing a new cIOS and getting an up to date loader version.
Look in the FAQ, post #1 to get some hints what to do. If you want to roundhousekick your wii use the softmod any wii guide by mauifrog to get new cIOS and a nice loader set.
if you intend to load nsmb from disc it may be nessecary to do some patching of the .iso, have a look in the problematic games thread, linked in the FAQ.

edit: just install on top what you got, no need to delete anything specific before starting over.

I just took a look at this a couple of days ago, and I am amazed at how detailed it is. While I doubt my vote counts for anything (someone was going to point it out), I think this should be moved to the Recommended FAQ's section.

Thanks. Actually we have an ongoing and never ending debate about some restructuring/moving some threads, this here would land in the Wii Learning Center as far as i can remember. Hopefully in the end a place where beginners have a first look at modding and other stuff, like the recommended guides section right now..
