SMB Config - FTW - WIN 7

OK i have seen many many posts on this...(and im sick of buring disc for my movies that me and the wife watch and im sick of the FD/HDD on the wii for movies) LOL...

At first i had trouble getting this to work and by looking at all the posts that where on this i decided to make a guide...

1. Make sure that you Download the Latest MplayerCE i use .77 (wiil add my files later)
2. The important part if this is that the mplayer folder is named mplayer_ce. and located in the apps folder on the sd card.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT in a homegroup


When you are editing your smb.conf file make sure that you have the correct ip address for your computer. AS pictured below:

3. Next what you want to do it go to your "c" or "d" or what ever your main drive letter is and make a folder called "movies" (no quotes and no uppercase)
4. Now right click on the folder and click share with:
5. You will get a screen like below and make sure that you add "everyone" and read/write access to the folder.THE CLICK SHARE

Now if you have a user-name and password make sure that you put that in the correct spots in the smb.conf file... but i have had success with lowercase and no spaces passwords and user-names, so that is what i would use for the computer or turn it off.

Now when you have the smb.conf files changed with the info and saved, its time to get your files in the folder. I know people on this site are prolly worried about the space that a movie takes up on the hdd... or many people will have then stored on a external hdd.. a decent rip movie is 750mb-2gb just through the movie that you want to watch on your hdd folder for the smb and then take it off when you are done...

Now when you have the .avi or .mp4 in the folder go to your wii and load mplayerCE and you should not get any FREEZING OR CRASHING (as i have not) when you try to load the SMB share. You should see your movies listed there and you click and play... Depending on the network load/quality it might take some time to cache and begin to play...

hello i cant get mplayer ce to work how do i setup in vista. when i do smb conf file i change it to txt file and type in the details do i need to delete # signs at the start of the lines . then i rename it back to conf file is that right when i try it says error reconnecting smb1.i have a user name and password as well do i need to put them in "password" that to get it working plz help

I see no reason why mplayer needs to be in root. It is an app like all the others.
Please try with it in the app directory only, with one smb.conf and modify your guide if it works as it will be confusing.
I know I have XP but the set up on the Wii should be identical.

The important part is that you need to not have a txt file it needs to stay a .conf file.. Open Notpad first then drag and drop the smb.conf file to the open notepad then when you are done click save NOT save as... This will keep it the .conf file... Try That

Thank you for that... i retested some things and realized that i typed in the name wrong in my folder and that is why i had it in two spots... thanks again!!!

hello and sorry to bother you i just cant get it working .the ip address that i search on google is 90.208.38.76 or if i do run command its 192.168.0.3 so wot ip address is right iv tried both but cant get it working this is just not working for me and i cant get cios 38 rev 18 to show on my sd aswell so plz help if u can thanks

Okay, i have setup Mplayer CE v0.76.

I believe i have the proper cIOS's as i can view a dIVX file on my USB stick fine.

Im trying to get the SMB streaming (or SOME form of streaming) to work.

Ive setup the smb.cfg file i believe properly, it has my local ip addy (the 192.168.x.xxx) properly. I have folders on my C drive named movie, i have a folder on my F drive (my 1tb drive with all my movies on it) all shared properly. All shared to "everyone" with read write access.

For testing purposes ive turned off my Firewall and should have port forawrding already setup on my router (once i get it working w/o firewall, ill set that up, but BELIEVE it to be forwarding already through port 8080)

Now, when i go into mplayer, i can play a movie just fine off the USB stick, however, when i go to Open>File>SMB> SMB connection 1 (or 2 or 3) it GOES there, but gives me basicly a blank mplayer screen. even tho i have files in the directories.


Also another question, in the smb.cfg file, the smb1=movies

does that point it to movies folder on my c drive? how do i specify which drive etc?


I also have looked at Samba on the web, trying to see if its like orb or tversity, and i need to be runnign something on my PC, it all apepars linux to me (which im completely unfamiliar with).

I have no password protection set, nor do i have a login password on my windows account to log onto my pc.

The ip address in your smb.conf is the ip address of your server (PC or whatever). Run IPconfig in a Command Prompt window and it will display it.
You should have smb.conf not smb.cfg
The name after the share is not the directory, but the share name on the server. Windows does not allow a share name to be the same on two different drives, it has a unique share name for the computer (try it and you'll see it won't accept the same share name on C: and D:)
On XP (other Windows will be similar)
Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management -> Shared Folders -> Shares
You may see that the Shared Folder is different from the Shared path directory. Yes it is a bit of a misnomer it would have been better if the column was headed 'Share Name'.
It is this first colum that needs to go in the .conf file.
Mplayer will only show files with extensions that it knows. To easily check whether you are actually pointing at the right share, all you need to do is reate a sub directory on your share directory and it will appear in Mplayer.

PM me your config file and i will look at it.... Otherwise the only port forwardering that i have is for utorrent... you dont need that for SMB with Mplayer???????

Thank you, that was what i was looking for. I couldn't understand how it was telling what drive etc to look at, but after you explained the "share" in admin tools, it made sense. I looked in there, and got the right share name for the folder on the right drive i wanted, and walla, working like a champ now.

There is a lot is misinformation on here about all sors of things. Some people use the same share name as the directory and tell people to use the directory name.
Kenzie - are you still stuck as well ?
