Increase Upload/Download Speed in Torrent Client

Here's how to boost your upload/download speed in your Torrent Client.
NOTE: This is only for Windows XP Users.

First Download [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]
Unzip it and run EvID4226Patch.exe

A Command Prompt Window should pop-up looking like this:

Press Y on your keyboard to continue.

It may now ask you if you want the TCPIP.SYS file to be renamed until patching. Selecting No (N) will abort the process while Yes (Y) will start the process:

You should now have recieved a message saying that the TCPIP.sys got changed and it will recheck the file in 15 seconds:

A pop-up like this should now appear:

Press cancel.

Another window should now appear:

Press Yes.

Now in the command prompt, it is recommended to reboot now and press any key to exit. Press any key on your keyboard and reboot:

Next open your torrenting client and locate the advanced preferences. In uTorrent it would be:
options>preferences>advanced. Once in the advanced section scroll down to "net.max_halfopen" the default value is 8. Change it to the value to match the one of the changed number of half open connection

Go to Run and type eventvwr.msc and click Ok. Select filters and in Event ID type 4226. If there are anymore errors, you can increase the number to 70 or 100 connections. To do this instead of pressing Y on the first screen in the EvID4226Patch.exe and type the number of max connections.

After you reboot you should have faster speeds. This worked for me.

dont think ive tried that one

another tip that a lot of people miss:

Limit your upload speed

The upload speed affects the download speed in essentially two ways:

* Bittorrent peers tend to favour those other peers that upload to them. This means that if A and B are leeching the same torrent and A is sending data to B at high speed then B will try to reciprocate. So due to this effect high upload speeds lead to high download speeds.
* Due to the way TCP works, when A is downloading something from B it has to keep telling B that it received the data sent to him. (These are called acknowledgements - ACKs -, a sort of "got it!" messages). If A fails to do this then B will stop sending data and wait. If A is uploading at full speed there may be no bandwidth left for the ACKs and they will be delayed. So due to this effect excessively high upload speeds lead to low download speeds.

The full effect is a combination of the two. The upload should be kept as high as possible while allowing the ACKs to get through without delay. A good thumb rule is keeping the upload at about 80% of the theoretical upload speed. You will have to fine tune yours to find out what works best for you. (Remember that keeping the upload high has the additional benefit of helping with your ratio.)

If you are running more than one instance of a client it is the overall upload speed that you must take into account. Some clients (e.g. Azureus) limit global upload speed, others (e.g. Shad0w's) do it on a per torrent basis. Know your client. The same applies if you are using your connection for anything else (e.g. browsing or ftp), always think of the overall upload speed.

Some Clients give better results then others. For example, I use uTorrent v1.8.3 on both my desktop and laptop. Gives my great speeds and lightweight. I also have the option to set my global upload speed limit.

same here, 1.8.3, its also a safe one as its not banned on any of the trackers i know unlike the older/newer versions sometimes! Its nice to be able to dump the Global upload if needed without having to stop the program while you need to do something else.

could be router not sending packets to the right IP, or you could try limiting the global DL speed to about 75% of you normal Max. Apart from that, im not sure!

Strangely enough, now my uTorrent is acting weird. Just uploaded a torrent and seeding it on both my desktop and laptop. At first I was only seeding on my desktop, 10 leeches and i'm still getting 0.0 kb/s on my desktop. So tried using my laptop and i'm getting 60kb/s upload. Problem solved. Seemed to be a problem with the leeches connecting.

So theres no solution for Vista?

I really don't care if there isn't one either as I only use Torrents when I need them.

Talking Extra Info for up/down speed increase

First I would like to thank shadow for posting this as it is an awesome patch. OK , Now I would just like to add to shadow's post. The second part of getting this to work is to open your bt client. I use utorrent so I'll just use it for example. Once utorrent is open click on options>preferences>advanced. Once in the advanced section scroll down to "net.max_halfopen" the default value is 8. Change the value so that it matches what you did in shadow's guide. Once you have changed the value click on apply and enjoy. Also as a side note do not set the value above 80 in shadow's tutorial unless you have a great defense from outside attacks. This patch basically opens your connection all the way.
