that is an updated list firmware R4 v1.18 kernel but it looks like alot are blue or red
(blue has problems, red not working) in the home brew and even some in the games.
i looked around to compare on his site but the r4 seem to be the olny one he keeps up to date

The Red and Blue are mostly Japan Games. And all the decent homebrew works. Most of that I don't even use.

question
I am planning to buy my son a DS Lite for christmas, and am wondering the best way to be able to play game backups, etc.
I read here that the m3 is a good way?
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]
Seen here, would this allow me to let my son play NES, SNES, GBA games on the DS Lite that are backup roms, etc downloadable or otherwise, by just putting those on the micro SD card and inserting it in the DS Lite?
If so i think this is the easiest way for me?

You would be able to nes or snes games using an emulator, but not GBA. The GBA game runs at a completely different speed, so you have two options:
1) Actually buy the games and plug them in the GBA slot (like it was intended).
2) Get some sort of flash cart.
Personally, I have an R4 with an EZ Flash 3-in-1 flash cart for DS lite. Using [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] you can patch GBA ROMs to the flash cart. (Other flash carts use SD cards or mini USB to connect to the computer. I'm only mentioning this step because this is the only way to write ROMs to the EZ Flash 3-in-1 since it's designed to fit perfectly in the Lite's GBA slot like the plastic dust guard that comes with it.)
If you don't want to shell out another $30 for a flash cart, don't. You can still run GB and GBC ROMs with Lameboy emulator.

So with an R4 or M3, i could play any sort of games? and load them on an SD Card? If so, how many games can you fit per SD card? I dont mine shelling out 30-50$ to not have to continually buy games for my son.

I'm not sure exactly how many games you would be able to put on your SD Card. Commercial roms are mostly 16, 32, 64, and 128 MB (generally 64 MB), while homebrew games are usually less than 1MB. The R4 and M3 can use any size microSD card up to 2GB (but no larger, microSDHC cards don't work).
I'm not sure about the size of GBA roms. I've only ever used one flash cart, and I don't think it's an accurate representation of the rest of the flash cart crowd.
