Well I for one am NOT sorry to see the clips go. The epoxy challenge just adds a few more minutes to the install.
Heatgun and scalpel - removes epoxy on pins
Dremel - removes epoxy on pins
Alt points on board - easiest work around
Nintendo dont really care themselves IMHO and want to do the least work they have too, its the games companies that are beating up Nintendo to take action as they lose money.
I think it would be nice to see alot more homebrew stuff come out and hacks for devices such as the USB to add external drives etc..
Following is video I found that shows removing of the epoxy. Its not something I would recommend doing as it can damage components and render your wii useless if not done right.

Actually nothing will damage unless you overheat it......i've done this from day one when Microsoft was adding the black epoxy on the ms28 all the way down to hitachi 79 drives.......so as nintendo added the epoxy on the d2e version wii, removal of the epoxy will be easy as adding a modchip. (guess I will be dusting off my window tint heatgun)

But i have seen a lot of website's that will sell you a replacement board for your dvd and with some a chip already installed, at least this will work on these new ones wont it ?

I am the SSBB master...
No....cause every wii drive version uses a different voltage, signal and other processing signals for the wii motherboard to pick up the drive, so you need to purchase the exact model drive for the wii motherboard to accept it.
And besides, not all the time you can purchase a wii drive with a modchip everytime you get a wii to mod.
