I thought so. Yesterday morning I noticed I had a Wii message, and when I viewed it, all it said was something to the effect of they released a new firmware update to prevent hacks and improve the Wii experience or something. Fairly blatant.. And the message didn't say anything about any other changes in the firmware update. I decided not to update yet.. It would be nice to be able to use my Wii as a DVD player. I wish Nintendo would just make DVD playback a standard feature.

Hello, to everyone , i'm new here (in this forum)...yesterday i received a e-mail from nintendo that said if i don't update my wii console since 23 october 2008 to update now.I updated and see nothing strange happend ( homebrew channel , homebrew launcher works) but i tried to install wad and i got "Error -2011" with ticket...Can anyone help me ( i dont have CIos installed)...??? Do you now if hackers (like Waninkoko) know it?? Will they help us soon ??? LAST , I STRONGLY RECOMMEND TO NOT UPDATE (NOTICE : I HAVE PAL WII ( 3.3E MINOR UPDATE)...PLEASE WRITE SOON...

I doubt it will be a supprise for anyone that nintendo will do what they can to block the use of the homebrew features...

I have no doubt that the homebrew community will work out a way of bypassing the new security measures.

Its a game of cat and mouse that has gone on since way before the Wii was even thought of.

Nintendo themselves have ways of playing DVD-r disks in un-moded wii's so they can beta test games. its just a matter of finding a way in.

nintendo will never make the wii play dvd movies, its a licencing issue, and does anyone really need another dvd player?

and i do wish people would read a thread before posing in it..... you will probably find what you are about to ask already has been answered.

So, if I get said firmware update, will I still be able to use the HBC and all the emulators, media players? I don't use .WADs (don't want to brick my wii) or DVDs (same inherit fear exists).

Yes , you can still use HBC and all your emulators ( including gba , gb , nes64 , gbc )...you might brick your wii if you have a modchip and play a game from other region and do update ( DO NOT DO THIS) With .WADs you might semi-brick your wii ( but you can unbrick it )

Yep, just installed the latest firmware update and everything still runs good. But, in that list of changes (first page) none of those took place, such as "usb HDD support added"...uh-huh...Is that source reliable?

I updated everything works fine but i didn't check the wad installer or dvd player. Where are these new features like the instant messager?

I sould say that almost is fake... 3.3 (23 oktober) just block the access to /dev/flash and apps like NAND DUMPER won't work anymore...HDD feature will be on JAPANESE Wiis not to EUROPEAN ... If someone find a way to downgrade i will downgrade to 3.3 (first edition) and install tona's SHOP CHANNEL + IOS51...

hey, if you already updated to the NEW v3.3 (which sucks), you can downgrade back to the old 3.3 without a chip.

I just downgraded and tried out the wad manager (v1.1) and it worked, plus I can still access the shop channel. I have CIOS36_rev5-64-v1042.wad installed if that makes a difference.

Anyway here is the downgrader. It takes a while to install but it's worth it. Extract and drag the folder to apps on your SD card.
