For those uninterested in reading through the links, here's Canadian Copyright in a nutshell :
In the late 70's, early 80's Cassette Tapes were being sold and the Canadian decided to charge a per unit fee (extra tax) on Cassettes. (Interestingly here are some current stats on fees being charged:
Audio cassettes of 40 minutes or more in length 24¢
CD-R, CD-RW, CD-R Audio, CD-RW Audio and MiniDisc 29¢
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]) In essence, these fees were collected to pay artists for Canadian's privileges to copy their music. This included BETA Tapes, VHS Tapes, CD's, DVD's and pretty much any re-recordable media. There was a decision made in 2003 in a case that the RIAA or someone tried to get a Canadian to pay royalties, and the Supreme Court Judge said no, as Canadians have already paid a fee for that reason. That has since allowed Canadians to download pretty much all content they wish, without any serious reprocussions. Where Canadians can get nabbed however, is by uploading content, then just like in the States, a person can get nabbed for being a digital pimp.
Hope this helps clear some of the confusion, and adds another reason why being a Canadian rocks!
