You cannot flash a drive other than the one it came with, unless you pull its number off of it and make the xbox think the real ones in it.. You need to check the type of drive as well, the newest drive that ALL xbox's come with now CANT be flashed to play backups (yet). xbox-scene.com

flashing the 360 drive is ez as can be... all you need to do is take the drive thats original in the 360. trip it to mode b. extract the firmware and drive key. then save that like 10 diff times all over the place.. then do same for the one you wanna use. then you need to install firmware you wanna use for your drive and the key from the original. then put it back in system.. reboot 2 times and walah. you can play backups and burned copys of games. ive done it to 3 diff 360's... everytime it takes me 15 mins from taking apart system to modding firmware to putting it back together and booting up copy game.

yeah, check out the site lemoncade told you to. It has pretty much all you need to know. You can buy a connectivity kit to flash the drive and then you are good to go.

That site has pictures of what the dvd drive tray looks like and you can pretty much tell what type of drive it is by that. Hope that helps.
