according to this it supports double layer, so I think I should be good

now I just need to decide if I should void the warranty or not :s seems like xbox360s breaks a lot, I'm still in university 1 more exam tomorrow night then I'll be back at home trying the Xbox360 that arrived.. hopefully its not a lemon

It's actually pretty easy to do. You can do it yourself.
I'd rethink doing it though. The only benefit you get is playing pirated games. Doesn't add any new features. And the downside is that if it breaks down, Microsoft won't fix it even if you want to pay for it. They just send it back to you. Just rent the games you don't want to buy.

Same drive I have. I don't have an Xbox 360 but I do have a modded PS2 and xbox and so far every burned disk I have thrown at them have played well (touch wood)

I'm scared of getting modded because it voids the warranty and we know that Xbox360 has lots of problems

It's not really a mod. It's just flashing the firmware on your disc drive to allow the playing of copied games. You can get the guide from searching on the internet and do it yourself, it's not too complicated. If you use usenet, got to alt.binaries.games.xbox360 and request the guide and tools, if it isn't already posted. Just look for 360fwtoolbox.
