    Wirelss Router + Modem Question

Today at Walmart I picked up a cisco E3000 wireless router. The sales person sounded like he knew a lot, but now I realize maybe he didn't. I am not very good with this type of thing and I asked if this would be all I need to get my wirelss internes going. He said yes, I could just plug my cable into the back of it and be good to go.... well there is no cable input, it looks like I need a modem? To get wireless working do you need a 2 in 1 modem/router? Can I get a cheap modem that will make this work? Will a cheap modem really hamper my performance?

Is it better to get 2 in 1, or two separate devices? Which products do you recommend? Anything good from walmart since I will likely be exchanging unless I decide to just get a modem?

    Is this one any good?

I'm confused. How do you recieve your Internet? Is it through the cable or through your phone line? You linked to a dsl device but you are talking about connecting with cable.

So I have to get a modem for sure? So should I take back what I bought and get a dual unit? Will I have better performance with a separate modem and router?

You have cable internet yet your provider didnt give you a modem to use? Usually when they set up they give you a modem and you run your cord from modem to router.

I would call your cable company and tell them what you want to do and ask what they can do for you or atleast recommend to you. Here they provided us not only with the modem/router unit but they also gave us the wireless USB cards for the computers that didn't have it built in. But I would never trust walmarts employees in the electronics department. Yes you may run into someone who knows what they are talking about but it wouldn't be likely. Go to a store that is known for their computer knowledge and let them help you if your cable company doesn't.
Or we can continue to help you here too if you prefer

If you have cable internet and no modem how the hell are you connecting to the internet? You can't just take the cable and plug it into your computer. You have to already have a cable modem. Do you have an ethernet cable connecting your computer to the internet or is it wireless?

Thats what I am wondering, no matter what you have to have a modem to get your internet to work if your using cable. Also, I found a router seperate from a modem works better but thats just me.
