    Ethics...?

I'm a long time member of WiiHacks and have passed the site on to many friends.

    But I have a question:

Is it unethical to accept payment of a carton of beer from a friend to softmod his Wii after you have told him about this wonderful site and he still insists you mod his Wii?

I think it would be ok. He is paying you for your labor not the free software you are installing. It's like someone paying me to plant a tree they already have. Yes they can do it but they would rather pay me to do it so it doesn't die.

Nope! If they can't do it themselves, there is no harm in taking any form of payment. In fact, I think that the people who are aware of this site and still opt to have someone else do it for them should pay! I have pointed several friends to this site and they still have asked me to do it. Most of them were very good friends so I did it for nothing. The last 2 were not close friends so they paid .

Just dont drink the beer before you do it, or you could end up in a tight situation with his wii.

Same as anything, isn't it? I can do most mechanical jobs on a car, but it doesn't me that when I'm feeling lazy (or don't have the time) I get to just rock up to a garage, give them the parts and make them fit them for free! Selling the tools and the manuals (Which are, in this case, free) would be very unethical and may be illegal depending on licensing etc.

Nothing unethical what so ever for accepting payment for services rendered. Kind of reminds me of the old beerware license.

@ cornflake - How is it considered labor to press a few buttons on a Wiimote. I suppose that since the softmod can be done in an hour or less, there is no real skill needed to do it, 1 hour pay at mininum wage would be acceptable.

@ rabbitbrew - what would be unethical is distributing copies of coprighted materials, payment or no payment.

This doesn't even rise to a questionable level of ethics. He is simply compensating you for your knowledge and labor (that being, able to successfully follow a guide freely offered). Add to that the fact he's aware of this site and still insists, I think the answer rather obvious.

I got $40 each for the last 2 I did! I did set up the HD for them and copy all of their games to it too.
